Taronda Spencer Award
For 15 years, Taronda Spencer was a part of the Society of Georgia Archivists (SGA). She was a member of the SGA Board and a consistent donor to the organization’s numerous scholarship funds.
Her most famous contribution to the group was moving the annual gathering to Spelman College, where she attended college.
Ms. Spencer encouraged several Spelman students to pursue careers in the field by acting as a mentor to several students, including previous SGA scholarship recipients.
She was also a founding member of the Academy of Certified Archivists, a leader in the HBCU Archives Institute, the Chair of the SAA’s Archivists and Archives of Color Roundtable, and a member of the Nominating Committee.
The Taronda Spencer Award was created by the Society of Georgia Archivists in 2014 to recognize her efforts to inspire students at HBCUs and students of color to think about careers in the archival profession. The award funds student attendance at the SGA Annual Meeting.
The Society of Georgia Archivists will not charge the successful 2022 Spencer Award applicant an annual meeting registration fee.
Additionally, the winner will get a $150 credit to use toward a Society of American Archivists (SAA) class or a purchase from the SAA bookstore, as well as an annual membership to SGA (or a one-year renewal if already a member).
A certificate of achievement will also be given to the winners.

Taronda Spencer Award Eligibility
Individuals eligible to compete for the award are those currently enrolled as a junior or senior at an HBCU with a demonstrated interest in Archives or students of African-American, Asian/Pacific-Islander, Latino, or Native American descent currently enrolled in a graduate program with a component in archival studies.
Applicants for the award may apply with or without additional nomination(s) from professors, colleagues, etc.

Scholarship Application: Due September 30, 2022
Scholarship applications with all required supplemental materials must be received, by September 30, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.
The application must be submitted through the online form and supplemental materials must be emailed as attachments (PDF preferred) to scholarships@soga.org.
Note that Applications must include the following information and supporting documentation:
- A cover letter or letter of interest
- A resume
- Documentation of your enrollment status (for example, an unofficial transcript showing continuing enrollment)
