Massachusetts has removed most government functions from eight of its 14 counties, while Alaska’s 323,440-square-mile (837,700 km2) Unorganized Borough had no borough-level governmental function.
Most counties have subdivisions which may include townships, municipalities and unincorporated areas.
Others have no further divisions or may serve as a merged city-county where a city and a county have been merged into a unified jurisdiction.

1. The Monterey County Fire Relief Fund
The Monterey County Fire Relief Fund was created on August 19, 2020, to help individuals and families impacted by current and future wildfires throughout Monterey County.
Grants from this special purpose fund will support nonprofit organizations assisting with relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts for individuals and organizations affected by the fire.
The grant guidelines are subject to change in order to be flexible and responsive to needs as they arise.
Monterey County Grant Criteria
At this time, grants from the fund will focus on relief and recovery efforts and will be considered for the following activities:
➢ Relief Efforts
They may provide funds to organizations that are providing immediate direct relief funds to individuals in Monterey County impacted by the fires. Some activities might include:
➻ Support for emergency shelter
➻ Support for evacuees and residents (food, housing and immediate needs)
➻ Financial help to those evacuated, and/or to those displaced or affected by the closure of businesses/employment
➻ Efforts to support firefighters (equipment, etc.)
➢ Recovery Efforts
Funds may be provided to organizations that are providing programming in Monterey County for communities affected by the fires. Some activities might include:
➻ Assistance to nonprofit organizations with program support and related impacts because of the wildfires and evacuations (Ex: program or service interruptions or relocation and reopening because of evacuations in the affected areas, equipment and other supplies because of evacuations and fire damage in the affected areas).
➻ Programming to address the related-mental health impact.
➢ Rebuilding Efforts
As a result of the size and scope of the fires, we expect the rebuilding efforts to be long term. Some possible activities might include:
➻ Assistance for individuals who lost property (items not covered by insurance)
➻ Environmental projects to replant and rebuild burn scar areas.
➻ Preparedness projects to help the community build disaster resilience.
➢ Selecting Of Grants
We expect the needs generated by these fires will exceed the available funds. CFMC staff will review applications for approval by the CFMC President/CEO.
Monterey County Grant Awards
Grants are expected to range between $2,000 to $30,000. Organizations may apply for more than one grant during the calendar year, as this fund is intended to be responsive to the ongoing needs of the community.
Grant Awards Eligibilities
➻ Grants are open to 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations and other public agencies serving the communities affected by the wildfires that began in Monterey County in August 2020.
➻ Businesses and individuals are not eligible to apply.
Monterey County Grants Exclusions
1. Activities that are non-secular or promote a religious doctrine
2. Academic or medical research
3. Funding to schools and public agencies that would supplant tax-supported, mandated services
4. Annual fundraising campaigns or events
5. Creation of, or addition to, endowment funds

Submitting a Grant Proposal
You can submit Monterey County Fire Relief Fund grant applications at any time while funds are available. Grantmaking decisions will typically be made within two to four weeks of receipt of the proposal.
How to Apply

2. Contact the staff person for the grant opportunity in which you are interested or the Grantmaking Coordinator, if you have questions about eligibility or applying with a fiscal sponsor.

2. Northern Monterey County Foundation (NMCF)
The Northern Monterey County Foundation (NMCF) was founded in 2016 and it is affiliated to fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County.
Each year, the NMCF Advisory Board determines where its available grant dollars can be placed for the greatest impact on their communities’ highest priority needs.
The Advisory Board, made up of community volunteers, will carefully review applications and award grants based on the published criteria.
The Community Foundation for Monterey County uses an online application system to make the process simpler and more efficient.
The Community Foundation for Monterey County’s competitive grant programs is restricted to funding efforts that serve Monterey County, CA residents.
The Grant Award
The NMCF has $40,000 available for grantmaking in 2021. Grants are expected to range from a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $3,000.
The number and size of grants awarded may vary depending on the Advisory Board’s assessment of a proposed project’s impact on Northern Monterey County communities.
Grant recipients will be expected to use all funds and provide a written evaluation of the project within 11 months from the grant date of late July. Funding decisions will be announced in July.
NMCF Grant Eligibilities
NMCF only considers grants for projects and programs serving the Northern Monterey County communities of Aromas, Bolsa Knolls, Boronda, Castroville Elkhorn, Las Lomas, Moss Landing, Oak Hills, Pajaro, Prunedale, Royal Oaks or Santa Rita.
Here are organizations eligible for Northern Monterey County Foundation grants:
1. Only 501(c)3 Nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply
2. Public programs, such as school activities and programs not included in normal curricula, parks, public health, etc. are eligible.
3. Church-sponsored activities with benefits to the entire community (e.g. a food pantry)
4. Organizations and collaboratives that are not legally incorporated—for these, CFMC requires an agreement with a “Fiscal Sponsor” defined as a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization accountable for the financial management of the grant.
5. Organization may only submit one application. However, if an organization is serving as a fiscal sponsor for a collaborative or unincorporated group, they can also apply for a grant to benefit their organization.
Guidelines and Application Details
Considering the ever-changing Covid-19 situation, in 2021 priority will be given to applications that reveal that the project or program will follow CDC, state and county guidelines on best practices regarding Covid-19 health safety.
The NMCF seeks to support nonprofit organizations that have the leadership and capacity to provide important community resources and services in Northern Monterey County communities
Funding will be considered for the following types of requests:
Program Support: For the expansion or refinement of existing programs, as well as new programs that show the promise of impact and sustainability.
Operating Support: Unrestricted grants to organizations.
Capital Support: For cost associated with buildings and/or facilities.
Organizational Development: to strengthen or enhance the internal capacity and infrastructure of organizations that have a proven track record of community benefit in Northern Monterey County.

3. San Joaquin County Grants
San Joaquin offers tremendous opportunities to the residents and businesses that call it home.

1. Business income (gross revenues) earners must give a convincing piece of how their business has been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
2. The business owner must have been in business since 1/01/2020 and have a valid business license (or equivalent license to do business in San Joaquin County)
3. You must have up to $100,000 available for past due (unpaid) rent, mortgage and utilities, or reimbursement of paid rent, mortgage, utilities, and PPE during the documented period of financial harm because of the pandemic (with proper documentation)

4. County Grants from The Henry Smith Charity
The Henry Smith Charity aims to use its resources to help people and communities at a time of need and to bring about positive change.
We achieve this by funding organisations that work with people to reduce social and economic disadvantages. Please briefly outline how they have been affected in your application.
However, as our process takes approximately 3-6 months, we would like your application to focus on how you wish to deliver your services once the current government restrictions have been lifted.

The County Grants programme provides grants for smaller organisations working with disadvantaged people and communities in one of three English counties.

Grant Size: £500–£20k (£10k max in any one year)

1. If your application has been put through to Stage 2, we will contact you to ask for additional information, which will include details about income projection, a budget, management accounts and your fundraising strategy.
2. The additional information we ask for is used to decide which applications will get a Stage 2 Assessment Visit.
3. To minimise delay in processing your application, we will ask you to provide this information within two weeks.
The Grant Assessment Visit
➺ The visit is an opportunity for us to discuss your work in more detail and to find out more about your organisation and the people you work with.
➺ During the visit, we expect to meet with staff and a member of the Board/Trustees.
➺ Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, visits are currently taking place virtually.
The Trustees make decisions quarterly. Within two weeks of the Trustees meeting, we will send you a letter notifying you of the outcome.
Grant/ Funding Guidelines
It will take up to six months to hear our decision from the date we receive your application. As with many of our grant programmes, we prioritise work that tackles problems in areas of high deprivation.
As this programme is geographically limited to specific counties the assessment of deprivation is considered in the context of need within each individual county.
We are looking to fund established organisations that have a track record and can show they are well placed to deliver the work they are asking us to fund.
We can only make payments to registered charities through this programme. If your organisation is not a charity, you must nominate a local registered charity to accept payment on your behalf.

5. Community Foundation of Lorain County
The Community Foundation of Lorain County has various funding opportunities for non-profit organizations that serve Lorain County residents in Arts and Culture, Education and Youth, Health and Human Services, and Strengthening Lorain County. Grants Priorities
➺ The Board is interested in innovative programs that respond to community needs, partnerships, and collaborative efforts. Lower priority is given to capital and equipment requests, mandated services, and duplication of existing services.

The Essex County Land and Environment Initiative (ECLEI) seek to improve the quality of life for Essex County residents by promoting stewardship of our county’s land, water, and other natural resources.
Since 1998, ECCF and our family of donors have proudly awarded 12,863 grants totalling $106 million to nonprofit organizations in and beyond Essex County.
ECCF grants are either donor-advised or public through a competitive program where eligible nonprofits may apply.
ECCF funds that offer competitive grant programs each provide a unique purpose, requirements and deadlines to help nonprofits determine eligibility.

Grants Objectives
The Adams County Community Foundation has focused its Adams County Grants program into three areas that support the Adams County Affordable Housing Initiative.

5. Projects aimed at promoting a particular religion or construction project for religious institutions
6. Programs at private schools that benefit only their students

No. Under all of our grant programmes, we only found work within the UK.
Ques: Can We Apply if We Are a New Organisation?
You must be able to send us audited or independently inspected accounts with your application, so we cannot consider an application from your organisation until it has produced its first set of accounts.

• Demonstrate your business was operating in NSW on 1 June 2021.
‣ You must have had a total annual Australian wage of $10 million or less on 1 July 2020.
