Ghent University Doctoral Scholarship is now open for applications from suitably qualified students. It is a fully funded scholarship for all students sponsored by the Ghent University.
About the Scholarship
One of the top 100 universities in the world and a significant university in Belgium is Ghent University. More than 200 courses are offered by our 11 faculties, which also carry out in-depth research across a broad spectrum of scientific fields.
The first European university in Songdo, South Korea, is Ghent University Global Campus.
The partner university is where the remaining PhD research is carried out, and this fellowship does not give financing for it.
Students must show that they will be financially supported at their home university for this portion of the PhD research (e.g. full-time PhD scholarship or salary).
Although there are no constraints on the subject of research, development-related issues will be given attention.
The degree to which a development action is relevant is determined by how well it matches beneficiary expectations, national needs, global priorities, and donor and partner policies.
Benefits of Ghent University Doctoral Scholarship
The researcher’s family circumstances, among other factors, determines the value of the scholarship at Ghent University.
The local promoter and the Ghent University promoter both receive a bench fee to help with operating expenses as well as travel expenses for the student, the Ghent University, and both parties.
Duration of Scholarship
1. The candidate obtains a scholarship for maximum 24 months.
2. Students are obliged to divide the scholarship into minimum 2 different research stays in Ghent (North) and need to return at least once to their home university (South) in between (=‘sandwich- schedule’).
3. The candidate must propose at least 12 months of locally funded research stay in the South after the first BOF funded stay in Ghent (North).
4. Due to all practical arrangements (visa, housing, contract,…) students are advised to stay for long periods in Ghent (e.g. 1 year).
5. This scholarship call does not intend to support students who plan only 1 research stay in Ghent.

Requirements for Ghent University Doctoral Scholarship
1. The proposals must be jointly submitted by a candidate, a promoter at Ghent University and a supervisor at the partner university.
2. No restrictions are imposed on the field of research preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development.
3. Development relevance relates to the extent to which the proposals’ objectives are consistent with beneficiaries’ requirements, country needs, synergy opportunities, global priorities and partners’ and donors’ policies.
4. Candidates need to come from–and have the nationality of–a developing country.
There must be a guarantee that the candidate can work full time on the PhD project for 24 months at the partner university in a selected developing country (South. This implies that the following conditions need to be fulfilled:
a). There must be a local PhD supervisor at the partner university or research center in the South;
b). A written statement is requested stating that the candidate is a funded fulltime PhD student or a staff member at this partner university and will be sufficiently exempted from teaching or other assignments as to be able to fully concentrate on the PhD research in the South.
c). This statement should also mention that the candidate receives a local PhD scholarship or salary for 24 months when working on the PhD at the partner university in the South.
