Growth Performance and Feed Utilization of Clarias Gariepinus (Teugels) Fed Different Dietary Levels of Soaked Bauhinia Monandra (Linn.) Seed Meal and Sun-dried Locust Meal (Schistocerca Gregaria)

ABSTRACT

This was conducted to evaluate the of soaked Bauhinia seed meal (Bauhinia monandra Linn.) and sun-dried locust meal as alternative protein sources for Clarias gariepinus and to determine the use of such unconventional diets could help in reducing the cost of feed inputs in aquaculture.

The analysis of the diet, carcass composition of fish, amino acid assay, and anti-nutrients was determined using standard methods. Data for each parameter were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) while the means of results were compared at a 5% level of significance.

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria with an estimated area of 12.5m.ha of freshwater, lakes, , and ponds (Ita et al., 1984) is capable of producing 512×103 metric tonnes of fish annually unfortunately, the country has not succeeded in attaining fish–food sufficiency (FAO, 1990).

In spite of efforts by succeeding governments through several agricultural programs, the desired objective of improving the fisheries sub-sector has not been achieved by the government.
