POVERTY ALLEVIATION PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIA

PREFACE

Nigeria is definitely rich in oil wealth but yet, economically poor. This situation of undesirable paradox has worsened to point of putting Nigeria into the set of the 25 poorest countries in the world at the threshold of the 21^st century whereas, it was among the riches in the early 50’s. With regards to this rising incidence of poverty, the Nigerian government since the current republic has instituted different Poverty Alleviation Programmes (PAPs). This paper carries out an assessment on these PAP’s with special focus on Nsukka district. It conducted a survey on Obukpa, Ibagwa-Ani and Nguru, all in Nsukka area. The work is divided into five chapters, with chapter one as the introductory chapter, while chapter two reviews relevant literatures on the topic. It also reviews past poverty reduction schemes before the era of the scope of this study. Chapter three explains the

methodology used in research while chapter four presents the data and analysis the results. Chapter four also gives details on t eh current PAP’s in Nigeria. The work is concluded in chapter five after it summarizes the project work and proffers recommendation o the way forward.
