– Dr Bill Jonas Scholarship –
Dr Bill Jonas Memorial Indigenous Fund is now accepting applications from suitably qualified students into their Dr Bill Jonas Scholarship for students. It is a partially funded scholarship for all students.
About Dr Bill Jonas Scholarship
Donations to the Dr Bill Jonas Memorial Indigenous Fund have helped fund this scholarship. The fund was founded with donations from the Wollotuka Institute, as well as friends, family, and community members who wanted to recognize Dr Bill Jonas’ commitment to Wollotuka and the University of Newcastle.
Dr Jonas, a proud Worimi man, is considered an Indigenous rights pioneer. Dr Jonas’ outstanding list of accomplishments includes work as a scholar, activist, and . Dr Jonas, Australia’s first Aboriginal PhD recipient and the country’s second Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, died on May 25, 2019.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Be enrolled in any year of any undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Newcastle.
2. Be enrolled either full-time or part-time.
3. Demonstrate academic progress either by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent required for entry for commencing students, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 for continuing students.
4. Establish your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity and heritage with the university as outlined here.
5. Demonstrate the impact of personal circumstances, such as carer, sole parent, financial hardship, English language difficulty, Indigenous Australians, long term medical condition or effects of abuse, disability, refugee status, regional/remote disadvantage.
6. Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

Required Documentation
Your application will not be processed unless you provide documentation. Prior to completing the online application procedure, please have all required documents ready to upload as PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, or JPG files.
A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you.
You may be asked to present documentation to back up your claims of educational disadvantage. These will be identified based on your specific application responses when you apply.
Benefit
The scholarship provides a total benefit of $5,000 over a 1-year tenure, provided ongoing eligibility is met for the term of the scholarship.
The scholarship will be paid in two lump sums of $2,500 following the Semester one and Semester two census dates.
Selection
Selection will be based on a competitive procedure that includes a review of the scholarship application and any required supporting documentation, as well as a comparison to the eligibility criteria.
The Indigenous Scholarship Selection Committee, which will comprise at least three people chosen by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor For Indigenous Strategy and Leadership, will make the final decision.
The details of selected recipients will be communicated by the Selection Committee to the authorized Scholarships Officer, and all applicants will be contacted via email. This will happen within 6 weeks of the deadline for scholarship applications.
