About NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a scheme set up by the Nigerian government to involve Nigerian graduates in nation-building and the development of the country. This is known as the national service year.

The unfortunate antecedents in our national history gave impetus to the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps by decree No.24 of 22nd May 1973.

However, the decree stated the NYSC is being established “with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity”.

Ahmadu Ali served as the first Director-General of the NYSC until 1975. The incumbent Director-General is Shuaibu Ibrahim.

Update on the Bill to Scrap the NYSC Program

The National Assembly has recently spoken up about her stand on the recent FG intention to scrap the NYSC scheme.

The call for the scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has suffered a setback as the House of Representatives, Thursday said it would not support the move to abolish the scheme.

Awaji-Inombek Abiante, a House of Representatives member, had in a Bill that has passed the second reading in the National Assembly called for the scrapping of the scheme founding to 48 years ago to boost national integration.

But, the Chairman, House Committee on Youth, Yemi Adaramodu, said the National Assembly has no plan to abolish the NYSC.

According to him, the NYSC is the most successful national program.

Updates on Corps Members Conscription Eligibility

Apparently, the  Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General, Shuaibu Ibrahim, while reacting to moves to scrap the NYSC scheme, reportedly said corps members were part of the national defence policy of Nigeria and could be mobilized for war if need be.

The National Youth Service Corps DG, on June 5, dismissed reports it was mobilising corps members for war, stressing that this was not true.

The NYSC national directorate in Abuja in a statement by the Deputy Director (Publications), Mr Emeka Mgbemena, affirmed that it would continue to safeguard the interest of corps members.
