Below is a list of scholarships for African students to study abroad offered yearly. These scholarships were offered last and previous years at the time of publishing this list.

1. University of Toronto Canada MasterCard Foundation Scholarship

The University of Toronto and The MasterCard Foundation are pleased to offer The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University to develop Africa’s next generation of leaders.

Thanks to the Foundation’s visionary support, U of T can now provide 67 African students with one of the world’s top-ranked educations—in one of the world’s most multi-cultural cities.

2. Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program in Japan

The World Bank and the Government of Japan, through the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program, offer scholarships for Masters Degree to postgraduate students from developing countries.

Eligible applicants should propose a program of study related to development at the master’s level, in fields such as economics, health, education, agriculture, environment, natural resource management, or another development-related subject.

3. Commonwealth Scholarship

Each year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission invites each nominating agency, university, or university body to forward a specific number of nominations for the commonwealth scholarship for developing countries.

Each nominating agency/university/university body is responsible for its own selection process, and in most cases, they will set a closing date in the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations.

Approximately 200-230 scholarships are awarded each year.

4. Harambe Fletcher Scholarships for African Students USA

The Harambe Fletcher Scholarship is a full-tuition award for young African entrepreneurial leaders wishing to pursue a master program at The Fletcher School at Tufts University, starting in September.

Eligible Field of Study

1. Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD)

2. A two-year, highly flexible, interdisciplinary, professional degree in international affairs

3. Master of International Business (MIB)

4. A two-year hybrid international business/international affairs degree program

5. Borlaug Fellowship Program for Developing Countries

The Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellowship Program (Borlaug Fellowship Program) helps developing countries strengthen sustainable agricultural practices by providing scientific training and collaborative research opportunities to visiting researchers, policymakers, and university faculty.

➢ Level of study: Masters in Agricultural Science and Technology

6. American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship

The American University, AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship promotes educational access and opportunity while enhancing international diversity.

The American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is offered for International Undergraduate Students.

Preference for the American University, American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship will be given to international students who have overcome various obstacles and challenges as well as those from diverse.

Also, underrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds.

➢ Level of study: Undergraduate degree

➢ Previous Application Deadline: varies between December and January

7. American University Merit Scholarships

American University’s merit awards for international students are partial, not full, scholarships.

They are highly competitive and based on a combination of outstanding academic achievement, excellent communication skills in English, leadership, volunteerism, and community service.

Scholarships ranged from the U.S.$6,000 to the U.S.$25,000 per academic year.

They are renewable for all four years of study based on successful continued academic performance.

8. Colby-Sawyer College Scholarships

International students are eligible for need-based and merit-based financial aid offere
d by Colby-Sawyer College.

The merit-based scholarships, Founder scholarships, Presidential scholarships, etc., increase based on academic ability and range up to $24,000 per year.

Academic Scholarships are automatically granted based on a student’s grade point average (GPA) or equivalent letter.

Also, number grades from the student’s Secondary School Transcript or College/ University Transcripts, if applicable. The college does not meet full financial needs.
