The Ashinaga Africa Initiative is now accepting applications from suitably qualified students for their Ashinaga Teaching and Mentoring Internship. It is a fully-funded scholarship for all students.

About the Internship

The Ashinaga Africa Initiative will welcome 49 selected scholars from 49 different countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to Ashinaga’s leadership programs in Kampala, Uganda, and Dakar, Senegal, to receive academic training in their studies of interest, as well as assistance applying to universities around the world.

Ashinaga is particularly interested in interns who can teach science courses, assist Japanese teachers, offer prior guidance on Japanese society and culture, teach other subjects, offer career counseling or leadership training.

Internship Dates

1. Study Camp Term 1: June 29th – September 2nd, 2022

2. Study Camp Term 2: August 26th – December 16th, 2022

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

1. Teach in a classroom setting of 5-30 students, with class allocation based on interns’ experiences and interests.

2. During the study camp, native-level English speakers will principally work with students who will go on to study English programs at university.

The Portuguese speakers will work with students who will go on to study at Lusophone universities.

3. Also, create an academic program catering to the students’ needs.

4. Advise the students about their options of universities abroad, as well as guide them through the application process.

5. In addition, formulate an engaging extra-curricular program to encourage bonding amongst the students and the self-confidence for leadership.

Requirements

1. Must be at university or have recently completed their degree.

2. Have a student-focused approach and a willingness to adapt teaching materials and methods.

3. Also, must be flexible and able to work in dynamic and new environments (both in and out of the classroom).

4. Can easily work with individuals with cultural differences and beliefs.

5. Fluent or Native English speaker (minimum: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 78, TOEIC 750; for non-native speakers)

6. In addition, full vaccination status.

Desired Skills or Attributes

1. Advanced Portuguese, Japanese (N3 or higher), or French language proficiency.

2. Experience in tutoring and/or teaching

3. Experience with IELTS or the SAT.
