The University of Newcastle Australia is now accepting applications from suitably qualified students into their Betty Josephine Fyffe Rural Equity Scholarships for students. It is a partially funded scholarship for all students.
About Betty Josephine Fyffe Rural Equity Scholarships
Betty Fyffe was a Tamworth native who grew up in the shadow of her father’s pharmacy. Betty loved nursing and had a special place in her heart for St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, where she had trained and worked for many years as a nurse.
Betty leaves her bequest hoping to improve the education of doctors, nurses, and allied health in training, expecting some may return to rural regions to practice their profession.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Be enrolled in any year (including honours) of a B Nursing, B Midwifery, B Physiotherapy, B Nutrition and Dietetics, B Occupational Therapy, B Medical Radiation Science, B Pharmacy, B Medical Science or Doctor of Medicine program
2. Be enrolled full time.
3. Demonstrate academic achievement either by an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent of 90 or higher (change factors included) for commencing students or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 6.0 or higher for continuing students.
4. Have lived in a regional or remote area of Australia for at least 12 months within the two years prior to the study.
5. Demonstrate activity in your local community (for example, volunteering or involvement in community projects).
6. Be an Australian citizen.
7. Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

Benefit
The scholarship currently provides a total benefit of $10,000 each year, paid as two lump sums of $5,000 each semester, in April and September.
The scholarship is ongoing for a maximum of 5 years, provided ongoing eligibility is met.
Selection
Selection is based on an assessment of the scholarship application and for the individual scholarship.
