BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY FARM

When Ebonyi state was carved out from Enugu state on 1^st October, 1996 the Abakaliki campus of the then ESUT, was upgraded to Ebonyi state university college by the Ebonyi state Edict No. 5 of 1998; and remained affiliated to it’s parent university, ESUT. What is today known as Ebonyi state university, started on July 30, 1980 when the Enugu state University of Science and Technology, ESUT, was founded as Anambra state University of Technology, ASUTECH, by the then Anambra state House of assembly law No. 7 of 1980.

In 1985, the ASUTECH, created a 4 campus structure and the Abakaliki campus, housing Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, consequently, in 1987, ASUTECH, Abakaliki campus took off with a pre-science programme and was later able to run courses in Agricultural and basic Medical Sciences.

However, the major landmark that launched the university to it’s present status came in 1999 when it is Excellency Dr. Sam. O. Egwu, Governor of Ebonyi State announced the upgrading of the university college to a full-fledged multidisciplinary university and the establishing statute received executive consent of His Excellency on Jan. 14, 2000. 

Organizational Structure of Ebonyi State University Farm.

 

Functions of Different Units of Ebonyi State University

(a)       Piggery unit: This is the units where pigs are reared, managed and produced. The Ebonyi State University piggery farm is managed by four livestock attendant. The daily activities and management is carried out by these four attendant on the bases of shift. The unit also have a doctor who cave for health aspect of the pigs. The piggery unit is made up of three (3) building portioned into pens for easier management. The pen is constructed in such a way each has a drinker, feeder and wallowing trough for wallowing.

(b) Poultry unit: This is one of the units where different types of birds are kept and reared. The farm is made up of different building portioned into different pen for easier management. The poultry unit is managed by attendant. The daily activities is carried out by the attendant with the help of the IT (industry training student who are posted to the unit. They poultry unit, is also achieved with a farmer manager who run for the health management of the bird for disease and infection diagnoses

(c) Ruminant unit: This is the unit concerned with production of cattle, goat and sheep. This unit is managed by two livestock attendant, and the daily activities of the farm is run based on shifting. The attendant manages the day to day running of the unit while the health management is managed by a doctor who administers treatment in case of any health problems. The attendant in duty takes out the cattle to the field to graze and later return them back to the paddock. The management practice or system is semi-intensive

(d) Micro livestock unit: In this unit we learnt about snailry, rabbity and apiculture. They are managed by the attendant and performed the daily activities and ensure the good welfare of the farm.

(e) Commercial unit: This unit deals with the marketing activities in the farm. This is where the products from different unit (poultry, piggery apiculture and ruminant) are sold. This product could be sold live or processed like chicken, pork and beef meat. This unit is managed by a devisal officer who sells, issues and keeps records of all business transaction on daily bases. This unit could be regarded as the revenue source of the farm. 

Aims and Objectives of Ebonyi State University Farm

1.   To create more enterprise and employment for the general populace

2.   To produce birds that have high conversation of feed for flesh

3.   To produce and distribute livestock products within the state beyond.

4.   To crease the utilization of poultry droppings, this is important in maintaining soil fertility.

5.   To improve animal protein consumption status of man kind.

6.   To improve the well far of citizens through modern animal agriculture.

7.   To respond to conserve perceptions market equipments

8.   To boost agriculture in the state.
