- Cal Poly requires you to declare a major when submitting your application. The selection process considers many factors for admission in an objective format in which applicants compete against other applicants within the same major. When your application is reviewed, they consider the following:
- Your Intended Program of Study is evaluated as they admit students by their major. Admission is competitive in all majors.
- They look at the college-prep coursework you have taken during high school, including the courses you have in progress or planned during 12th grade. The selection process is based on your self-reported information. Please do not send official transcripts unless they request them.
- Your 9th-11th grade GPA will be weighted for the purpose of your application. That number is calculated from college-prep coursework as designated on your application. Weight is granted for courses designated as “honors,” “college-level,” “advanced placement” or “international baccalaureate” for up to eight semesters.
- Standardized Test scores for Fall 2021 admission decisions will NOT be considered. Only ACT or SAT 1 scores are used in the selection process. You may send as many ACT and SAT 1 score taken before November 30 as you’d like and the best score for each area will be applied.
- Cal Poly takes activities such as work experience, internships, volunteer programs, and extracurricular activities into consideration. They are also interested in any leadership roles you may have held in these activities.

Is it hard to register for the classes you want?
Cal Poly offers a wide variety of classes, and only a certain amount of students are able to enroll in them. That being said, for your first year of college at Cal Poly you are blocked into the majority of your classes! For Fall Quarter, you do not have to worry about registration at all, unless you see an issue with the classes you were blocked into.
For winter and spring, you are blocked into the majority (if not all) of the units you need for those quarters, but often it varies depending on major. If you have specific questions regarding registration and how to complete it, the Mustang Success Center offers quarterly Registration Workshops that you can attend!
Who is eligible to live on campus?
Any student enrolled in eight or more units can apply for campus housing. Housing is required for first-year students. As of 2021, a second year on campus is required for members of the Cal Poly Scholars Program, Student-Athletes, CAED students, CAFES, and CENG.
Other continuing and transfer students can apply to live in campus apartments until all spaces are filled. Once housing is full, students can apply to an interest list.
