ABSTRACT
This study examines the link between US diplomacy and the Iranian nuclear programme. The thrust of the study however is to ascertain whether Iranian nuclear programme limits America’s access to the Middle East oil as well as her global campaign against terrorism.
The study also investigates the extent to which American foreign policy towards Iran is an outcome of Iranian nuclearization which seeks to undermine Israeli security.
Relying on Realist Approach as our explanatory framework, the study argues that since American interest in the Middle East is not compatible with that of Iran, Iran’s nuclear enrichment is bound to undermine America’s national interest in the Middle East region.
Adopting observational technique and depending on secondary sources, relevant data were generated and analyzed. On the basis of this, the study contends that America’s interest in the Middle East region is securing access to oil and to a lesser degree, championing of global fight against terrorism as well as protecting Israel, its major ally in the region.
Therefore, granting that America’s long-term interest is jeopardized by the Iranian nuclear programme. The study maintains that America should not only project Iranian nuclear programme as a multilateral programme but should sincerely explore a common area of understanding with Iran so as to forestall the protracted and endemic crises in the Middle East.

INTRODUCTION
Current hostility between the United States and Iran runs deep because of the historical grievances each side brings to the conflict. Many are unaware that in 1953, the CIA helped engineer a coup against the democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh.
Iranians typically view this event as the beginning of bad blood between the nations. In contrast Americans who do not know this history believe the 1979 Islamic revolution and seizure of 52 American hostages precipitated the animosity (Travis Sharp, 2009).
He went on to state that a negotiated bargain between the US and Iranian government will not be easy to achieve because the two nation’s interests fundamentally diverge. American security interest in the middle East revolve around access to petroleum resources, the elimination of terrorist threats, stopping the spread of weapon of mass destruction and protecting Israel.
On each of these core objectives, the Iranian government seems to stand athwart to U.S governments goals. But the opposite is also true. The primary interests of the Iranian government are regime survival and regional hegemony. The United States and Israel appear to be the biggest threats to these ambitions.
How soon these opposing interests will be reconciled through diplomacy is still a matter to be seen more so when you take into consideration the position of the Iranian government towards the nation of Israel. It is on record the statement or pronouncement of the Iranian president Ahmadinajad calling for wiping away of the state of Israel.
