How to Summarize JAMB Use of English Novel

The book is basically your high school or secondary school experience detailed in an approximately 90-paged book with minor twists and exceptions.

You may not have had the protagonist’s character or qualities, but for every other character in the book, you would find at least one that you would relate to.

Finding a Character You Can Relate With

You may be wondering how to go about this. Well, this is how; If you are reading this book, knowing that you would definitely answer questions on it in your JAMB examination, you would have to read this book MORE THAN ONCE!

So, at your first read, you should enjoy the story, Savour the characters’ joys and sorrows and just get lost in the story. It is during this time that you find a character you would relate with; one that you would easily understand the story through.

See the story through the character’s eye. Understand the happenings through this your chosen character.

Read the Book Again

This is the time when you take note of the details, the characters’ names, ages, classes, life conditions, pains, sorrows, joys, hobbies, crushes, insecurities and so on.

Other details you may want to take note of are the characters’ parents’ occupations, the names of the different principals mentioned, the teachers; who said what and why, and lastly, who was related to who and how.

Record the Details

Now, of course, we don’t mean record every single detail in the book out! What we only mean is that you get a neat book and write down most of the details that you would not easily remember if asked once woken from your sleep.

Also, never make the mistake of taking any detail as inconsequential or ‘not important’ because, from past experiences, it is the details that are considered ‘unimportant’ that JAMB mostly focuses on.

A good example is the name of Efua Coker’s former principal (Mrs Obange) or the snack seller’s name (Mama Silifat).

Examine Yourself

After recording the details, you examine yourself. Ask yourself questions from the book. Preferably, flip to the last two pages of the book and answer the questions asked there.

Then, most importantly, get your copy of JAMB Past Questions In English and answer the questions asked in the book.

Summarise

This is the last part where, after carrying out the above stated, you sit yourself down, get an exercise book and write down everything you remember and have found out to be relevant, in line with the past questions you have already gone through.

Do this chapter by chapter; this way, it is much more understandable when going through it on the day of your examination.
