In addition to federal and state grants, there are a plethora of private organizations and businesses offering grants, specifically for African American students.
Attending college and completing a degree are important academic goals for any student. Unfortunately, there is a pronounced racial gap in enrollment rates at top colleges and universities around the country.
Affordability is a concern for all college-bound students, including African Americans.
Fortunately, a number of scholarships and financial aid opportunities are earmarked specifically for their demographic.
Several organizations offer even more specific aid opportunities, such as scholarships for African American women.
1. The MSU MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program
The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Michigan State University for master’s students is open to students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree at an African university and are residents or citizens of an African country.
The scholarship provides comprehensive support for the completion of a bachelor’s or master’s degree. The four cover-travel costs, Visa and SEVIS fees, Tuition and other MSU fees, Housing, food, and living expenses, Health insurance. Program Scholars are also provided with a laptop and a backpack.

2. The UC MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program
At the University of California, Berkeley, the Program will provide comprehensive financial, social, and academic support for up to 118 students eight-year program from 2012 to 2022, and is open to both undergraduate and professional Master’s students.
MasterCard Foundation Scholars receive a comprehensive scholarship equivalent to the costs associated with earning a Bachelors’s or Master’s degree, which includes travel, tuition, Berkeley student fees, visa and SEVIS fees, housing, food, living expenses, and cohort signature programs which will focus on leadership topics.

3. Foreign Fulbright Student Program
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is administered by binational Fulbright Commissions/Foundations or U.S. Embassies.
The program is open in the USA for 4,000 Students (Masters and Ph.D.) who are citizens of more than 155 countries worldwide, including countries in Africa.
The number of awards varies per country, but approximately 4,000 foreign students receive Fulbright scholarships each year.

4. The MSFS Continues Scholarship for Students from Africa
The Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) at Georgetown University began offering a full-tuition scholarship for a talented graduate student from sub-Saharan Africa.
MSFS is a two-year, full-time graduate degree program in international affairs. Students will take courses in international relations, international trade, international finance, statistics and analytical tools, and history.

5. UNCF-MERCK Science Research Scholarships and Fellowships
UNCF-Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards were developed to help African American undergraduate students interested in science to further their education and pursue science careers.
These awards provide tuition support and opportunities for research experience in state-of-the-art research facilities.
Each annual award is worth up to $35,000, which includes up to $25,000 towards tuition, books, fees, and room and boards.
Each UNCF-Merck Undergraduate Fellow will be mentored by a Merck scientist and will receive two Summer Research Internships with minimum stipends worth up to $10,000.
One internship will take place in the summer following the junior year and the other in the summer after graduation.
The internships will take place at a Merck research facility in Rahway, NJ, West Point, PA, or San Diego, CA.

6. Ron Brown Scholar Program
The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society.
Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities, and demonstrate financial need. All applicants must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Applicants must submit an application, two essays, two letters of recommendation, a high school transcript, and a listing of honours and activities.

7. Gates Millennium Scholars Program
Funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this program was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American and other minority students with the financial opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education.
This is for all discipline areas and graduates education for students who choose to pursue studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science.

8. ABA Diversity Scholarship
This fund was created to increase the number of traditionally underrepresented minority groups in the management and operation ranks of the transportation, travel, and tourism industry.
Applicants must have completed at least their first year of college at an accredited university, have a declared major or course of study relevant to the transportation, travel, and tourism industry and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Selectees are judged on academic merit, character, and leadership in their community, financial need, and dedication to advancing the transportation, travel, and tourism industry.
The ABA Foundation recognizes that diversity is essential in promoting understanding and mobilizing greater involvement in our industry. An impartial committee of educators is responsible for selecting the winners.
