About General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM)
General Nursing and Midwifery or GNM is a three-year and six-month diploma program designed for aspirants who want to pursue a career in clinical nursing.
The program teaches candidates how to care for individuals who are sick or have been injured in order to help them attain full recovery.
Although the curriculum design of the course varies from university to university, GNM courses are designed to prepare the students for the clinical approach of handling patients.
The curriculum of some universities includes a six-month internship at the end of the course and the diploma is granted only after the candidates complete this internship.
GNM Course Details
It is a Diploma course, commonly just known as the GNM course. Duration: The course is 3½ years long. The academic program is of 3 years and 6 months are dedicated towards internship.
The internship is mandatory. After completing this course, successful candidates may register themselves as a or midwives with the state nurse registration council.
GNM Eligibility Criteria
Age limit: A candidate must be at least 17 years of age. The applicant must not be more than 35 years of age.
Educational Qualifications
According to the website of the Indian Nursing Council, the 10+2 Science stream Biology group (PCB) passed students are the most preferred ones.
However, it has also been mentioned that 10+2 Arts stream passed students are also eligible to pursue this course.
Minimum aggregate marks required may vary from one institute to another. Usually, it is around 40-50% marks.
Important Note
It has been noticed that the educational requirement varies from one institute to another. With many institutes offering GNM courses, the minimum educational requirement is- 10+2 passed in any stream (Science/Commerce/Arts)!

Registered Nurses who possess ANM (Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery) Diploma are also eligible to pursue the GNM course.

Most institutes follow the ‘direct admission’ process. Seats are allotted to deserving applicants based on the marks scored by them in the 10+2 board examination.
In the case of some reputed institutes, private screening tests and interviews are also used in the admission process.

Salaries offered after pursuing GNM followed by a PG diploma or master courses in nursing are lucrative. Nurses working in forensics, ICU, and private home care can earn up to Rs. 4.9 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh per annum.
Salaries also increase with the job profile of the nursing profession. Specialists, consultants, and professors in this field get packages varying from Rs. 5.5 lakh to Rs. 9.13 lakh per annum.
