Eligibility Criteria for the Government of Ireland Scholarship

The following criteria must be met by applicants in order to apply for a Master’s or Doctoral Scholarship Presented by the Government of Ireland in any discipline:

• Languages required: English

• All countries in the world are eligible

• An applicant must hold a first class or upper second-class honours bachelor’s degree, or the (equivalent) degree. Scholars who do not know their undergraduate exam results may be offered a scholarship provisionally in the event that their bachelor’s degree result is a first class or upper second-class honours. Scholars without a first class or upper second-class honours bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent, must possess a master’s degree. An applicant’s eligibility is determined by the Council based on these criteria.

• The applicant must not have submitted two previous unsuccessful applications to the scheme, including strategic partner themes.

• In order to receive Council funding, the applicant must be new to the academic program and have been formally accepted into the department or school.

• An applicant for a research master’s scholarship must not hold, or have held previously, a Council Postgraduate Scholarship

• Students applying for PhD degree scholarships must not hold or have held any Council Postgraduate Scholarships other than those that would enable them to obtain a research master’s degree.

• Based on nationality and residency, applicants will fall into one of two categories.

• Applicants for category I must meet both of the following requirements: be a citizen of a member state of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland AND have ordinarily resided in an EEA member state or Switzerland for three of the five years preceding October 1, 2010.
