Role of Scientists Throughout History

The roles of “scientists”, and their predecessors before the emergence of modern scientific disciplines, have evolved considerably over time.

Scientists of different eras (and before them, natural philosophers, mathematicians, natural historians, natural theologians, engineers, and others who contributed to the development of science) have had widely different places in society, and the social norms, ethical values, and epistemic virtues associated with scientists—and expected of them—have changed over time as well.

Who Is a Scientist?

 A scientist is someone who systematically gathers and uses research and evidence, making a hypothesis and testing it, to gain and share understanding and knowledge.

Scientists are the people who ask a question about a phenomenon and proceed to systematically go about answering the question themselves.  They are by nature curious, creative and well organized.

They need to have the ability to observe something and see in it some of the properties other people overlook. A scientist is a person who is able and willing to live with uncertainty as long as it takes to dispel that uncertainty through an objective, logical process (a.k.a. the Scientific Method).

What Does a Scientist Do?

There many types of scientists and they do a lot of things as well. The first scientist observe, just like our senses help us to study and observe certain things in our environment, a scientist observes with their eye, feel with their hands, listen to details carefully with their ears and think critically about their observations.

Scientists may work in laboratories for governments, companies, schools and research institutes. Some scientists teach at universities and other places and train people to become scientists. Scientists often make experiments to find out more about reality, and sometimes may repeat experiments or use control groups. Scientists who are doing applied science try to use scientific knowledge to improve the world.

Scientists work in a remarkably diverse array of industries. Companies employ scientists to develop and improve products. Universities hire scientists to teach and do research in different disciplines; healthcare companies have a team of scientists working on medications, vaccines, and new treatments; and governments employ scientists to help with public projects.

Scientists not only perform their specific job duties, but they contribute to the broader scientific community to increase knowledge of the physical world.

With a broad array of specialisms that you can enter into, it’s certainly not an easy career choice to pick from, where you can work across the fields of biology, chemistry, and maths. Working the typical 9-5 routine, you’ll be doing the usual 40 hour week.

Depending on the job, you may have to do the odd bit of overtime or weekends, but that’s something many sectors have to do eventually.

When you aren’t in the lab experimenting, you’ll be visiting other people’s labs and offices, especially if you’re working on the same project, which can often happen if you’re crossing the line between academic and industrial research.

The work isn’t just restricted to the lab though; you’ll also be expected to attend conferences where other scientists will share their work. Not just an outside work activity to bail out on, this is part of your job, as the networking allows the scientific community to keep up to date with each other.

If you hadn’t guessed from the job title, the role revolves around researching as well as conducting and analyzing experiments for both academic and industrial reasons. This means you could work on anything, from developing new products for a company to working towards a scientific breakthrough in the health sector. Many scientists enjoy working with the public. Others see this obligation as a distraction from the work they would like to be doing.

 Types of Scientists

Not all scientists wear white coats and work in labs. There is a wide variety of jobs and careers that require knowledge and application of science, from research to business and from regulation to teaching.

There are many different kinds of scientists, and they all do different things. Some like to learn about living organisms.

They are called biologists. Others like to study rocks. We call them geologists. People who study animals are sometimes called zoologists – this is easy to remember because sometimes animals live in zoos.

Communicator Scientist

They might be developing products or services, ideas that change behavior, improvements in health care and medicines, or the application of existing technology in new settings.

Explorer Scientist

The Explorer Scientist is someone who, like the crew of the Enterprise, is on a journey of discovery “to boldly go where no one has gone before”. They rarely focus on a specific outcome or impact, rather they want to know the next piece of the jigsaw of scientific understanding and knowledge.

They are likely to be found in a university or research center, or in Research & Development (R&D) at an organization, and are likely to be working alone.

Investigator Scientist:

Business Scientist

Go with the Flow!

No need to be so organized, after all, the title reads Mad Scientist, right? Dress in outfits that you can get messy because you will make a mess if you make Experiments.

Have a Lab.

This is a very important step because every scientist has a scientific Laboratory! It could be in your backyard, a treehouse could be anywhere in your house like your room, the bathroom, the basement, or even a secret room that no one but you knows about! Just make sure that it is big enough for doing experiments and research.

Have the Supplies.

Look at things you will need. You will need a different thing for different Experiments, so make sure you have those things.

Think and Plan.

Making Blueprints, for example, is good for when you are inventing something. Or you could write a list of the things you want to invent, things you want to do research on, etc.

Make and present. If you think that they will work, make your inventions. Test them out, just in case. After that present your new invention to someone. Maybe your friend or your family! This is one of the most fun parts of being a scientist.

The Needed Criteria for Being a Dream Scientist During College and After College

Becoming a scientist is a cool career path. Scientists are adventure-seekers, discovering new medicines and sending rockets to outer space. Scientists are naturally curious and make a living out of asking lots of questions. They observe and create theories through sound research and experimentation.

Children who are inquisitive and have keen observation skills may think about life as a scientist. To be a scientist as an adult, kids should plan now to take the right courses in school.

You should have that motivation to learn more about science and technology. This motivation and passion are vital because, becoming a scientist and doing science requires a lot of hard work and, while it can be fun and rewarding, the salaries of scientists don’t match those of other highly-specialized professions.

Meet with your school counselor about your goals of becoming a scientist. The counselor can help you to make the right class choices; your counselor may know of special science magnet programs, such as a marine biology high school, or other programs that are geared towards science.

Attend local lectures at science museums and zoos. You will hear real scientists talking about their research. Visiting museums and zoos is a good way to learn about different kinds of scientists and their roles.

Attend science camps and other children’s science programs at local museums, botanical gardens, universities, and zoos. When you are a teenager you can volunteer with local wildlife, astronomy or other science organizations. Good grades in school are important, no matter what stage you are in your education. Grades help you get to good schools, help you get to graduate school.

While nobody will judge you solely by your grades (I certainly won’t!), for students fresh out of university, grades and quality of education are often the most important information recruiters have to decide, say, who to interview for graduate school.

Study hard in high school taking courses in math, science, English and other subjects recommended by your school counselor. The best way for kids to become a scientist is to graduate from college with a bachelor’s in science. To get accepted into college, you need a solid high school education in math, science, and English.

Create a science fair project in high school to compete in local, at the national level and internationally at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Kids compete for recognition for their science projects and can win scholarship money for college.

Graduate from college with a science degree with a specialization in biology or physics. During the undergraduate college years, students should choose a science specialization so they can attend the right graduate program.

Attend graduate school to achieve a master’s and a doctorate degree in a science specialty. Once you graduate you can work as a scientist at a university, private research company or other science organization.

While in college, work with different research scientists or science professors to find the field that most interests them. Volunteer with science organizations such as local wildlife groups to learn about different scientific issues. Find a science mentor to help with questions about choosing a science career.

Related to academic performance, you should practice doing science. This can be on your own (as a kid I studied the ants in our house and wrote a report detailing my findings) or within a research lab.

Often there are summer projects in research labs even for high school students and once in university, this is something you should actively pursue.

It will give you first-hand experience on what scientists do on a daily basis and, if you do well, it will help you establish a rapport with researchers who can provide letters of recommendation and help your career.

Letters of recommendation are an essential component of applications to graduate school, jobs and even internships. Thus establishing connections with teachers and, preferably, researchers in the field you wish to pursue is essential from an early age.

So do not be afraid to be involved in science and contact researchers in your area of interest–e.g., volunteer to help out in their lab.

As a piece of general advice, make no mistake that you will need to work hard. Even outside your formal education, you need to gain experience and study your field of interest, and it takes hard work to become an expert. To make discoveries, to learn more than what is known, you need to know what is known.

To become a successful scientist you will need to write a lot (thesis, papers, grants). Since English is the language of science, you will need to write a lot in English. The basic element of scientific productivity is papers (see goals in Table 1).

These are original pieces of research that advance our knowledge of a particular topic. A typical paper may report a particular experiment you did in which you also need to interpret your results and put them in the context of what is known already. You will also need to apply for funding, maybe even early in your career (e.g., a studentship or fellowship).

Briefly, a grant application involves describing a project and how it will advance our current knowledge and can vary from a single page to dozens of pages.

You will also need to give oral presentations and lectures throughout your career. As s
uch, developing communication skills (and English proficiency if it is not your first language) will be vital for your career. You should develop your communication skills and attend workshops/courses if necessary.

 You can only become a research scientist if you have a good degree (a 2.1 or above) in a science subject. A relevant postgraduate qualification (a Ph.D./research-based MSc) is also normally required, particularly for permanent positions. An Average Scientist Salary

The all-important money question well, your salary will depend on your role in the science sector. But whether you’re working for academic purposes or creating something for the industries, you won’t have to scrimp and save in this job.

When you first start out, you’re taking home between £16,500- £22,000 (depending on employer and location), but by the time you move up to research assistant, you’re looking at bringing home around £26,000-£35,000.

Looking at progressing to something more senior in salary and role? Stay committed to the job for around 10-15 years, and the salary rises up to £57,000 for senior research fellow roles, especially if you go into the private sector where wages are slightly higher.

Working Hours of Scientist

Hours are completely dependent on where you work, but in a University you would be expected to work 9-5 Monday to Friday, whereas within the industry you could be expected to work in more of a shift pattern, which might include evenings and weekends.

1. (1642–1726) Newton was a polymath who made investigations into a whole range of subjects including mathematics, optics, physics, and astronomy. In his Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, he laid the foundations for classical mechanics, explaining the law of gravity and the laws of motion.

2. (1822–1895) Pasteur contributed greatly towards the advancement of medical sciences developing cures for rabies, anthrax and other infectious diseases. It also invented the process of pasteurization to make milk safer to drink. He probably saved more lives than any other person.

3. (1564–1642) Creating one of the first modern telescopes, Galileo revolutionized our understanding of the world, successfully proving the Earth revolves around the Sun and not the other way around. His work Two New Sciences laid the groundwork for the science of Kinetics and the strength of materials.

4.  (1879–1955) Revolutionised modern physics with his general theory of relativity. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1921) for his discovery of the Photoelectric effect, which formed the basis of Quantum Theory.

5.  (1879–1968) Hahn was a German chemist who discovered nuclear fission (1939). He was a pioneering scientist in the field of radiochemistry and discovered radioactive elements and nuclear isomerism (1921). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1944.

6. (1831–1879) Maxwell made great strides in understanding electromagnetism. His research in electricity and kinetics laid the foundation for quantum physics. Einstein said of Maxwell, “The work of James Clerk Maxwell changed the world forever.”

7. (1791 – 1867) – English scientist who contributed to the fields of electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, electrolysis, and electrochemistry. Discovered Carbon and Chlorine.

8. (1834 –  1907) Russian Chemist. Formulated the Periodic Law and standardized the Periodic Table of Elements which is still used today. Mendeleev wrote Principles of Chemistry(1868–1870) a classic textbook for many decades.
