IMD Business School is an independent business school with Swiss roots and a global reach that specialises in creating leaders and reforming organisations to have a long-term effect. This page provides additional information about IMD Business School and how to apply.

The history of IMEDE and its merger with IMI is documented in Jean-Pierre Jeannet and Hein Schreuder (2015, chapters 2 and 4). Its is unusual for business schools, which are usually university-affiliated.

IMD was formed in January 1990 through the merger of independent management education centres International Management Institute (Geneva) (IMI).

More so, it was established in 1946 by Alcan, and Institut pours l’Etude des Methodes de Direction de l’Entreprise (IMEDE) Lausanne established in 1957 by Nestlé.

IMD focuses on training and developing general management and leadership skills.

IMD selects experienced candidates for both the Master of (MBA) (average age 31) and the Executive MBA (average age 40).

Its other focus is to have a broad international group of participants attending open programs to ensure that no nationality dominates.

IMD Business Programmes

1. Executive MBA Programme EMBA:

You can take your global Executive MBA in 15 months or spread your learning over a longer time depending on your work commitments.

Whatever the pace of learning you choose, you will only be away from the office for 9 weeks.

Business themes run across the entire Executive MBA program and are addressed through different angles as your knowledge and experience grow.

Programme Application Process

The IMD Executive MBA program has several starting dates each year. As competition is high for places in the program, the school recommends that you start the application process as soon as you and your company are sure of your decision.

As soon as they receive applications, these applications will be reviewed and acceptance decisions made. This means that the class can fill up even several months before the date it actually starts.

The school, therefore, recommends that you apply early, as it typically responds to all applicants within 3 weeks.

Your application should include:

  1. Completed and signed application form
  2. One sponsor’s letter of recommendation

  3. Two general letters of recommendation

  4. Official transcript/s of the university degree

  5. Application fee (CHF 200)

Programmes Fee

The fee for the program is CHF 105,000. This includes tuition, learning materials and a three-course lunch served at IMD on weekdays.

2. Master of Business Administration:

Programme requirements throughout the admissions process. The school sorts for a holistic overview of your academic ability, career progression.

The Institute desires to know to want to know what you will contribute to the learning experience of your classmates and to the future of business and society.

Bachelor’s Degree: your degree should come from an accredited school

Work Experience: IMD business school requires a minimum of three years, full-time, postgraduate experience so that you can show your career progress. The typical range in the class is four to nine years.

Two Recommenders: You have to choose people from business-related sources who know you well, have worked directly with you.

Also, those who can highlight your professional achievements, interpersonal skills, teamwork, and leadership, using our form.

GMAT/GRE: the average GMAT score in the class is typically around 680. While your unique experience and achievements can help balance out a weaker score.

Also, the school recommends that you aim for above a 630 (or an equivalent GRE score). You should ensure to list IMD as a receiver of your score.

TOEFL/IELTS: the entire program is taught in English. If English is not your native language and you have not previously studied in English, then you will need to submit a TOEFL or IELT score.

There is no minimum requirement. Ideally, we recommend 108+ on the TOEFL (IBT) or an IELTS score of 7.5 or above. Our TOEFL IBT Code is DI (C301). 

However, you will contribute to the learning experience of your classmates and to the future of business and society.

Admission Process

When choosing your application deadline, ensure you leave enough time to prepare in advance while also bearing in mind any other constraints that will influence your decision timing.

Once your application has been reviewed, successful candidates will be invited for an interview and further assessment.

More so, these will include an elevator pitch, a team experience, class observation (where possible) and networking with our participants or alumni and members of the MBA team.
