Indian Administrative Service Syllabus
A good understanding of the UPSC syllabus and exam pattern is the first step for all freshers. The Civil Services Preliminary exam comprises two compulsory papers of 200 marks each (General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper-II).
The questions will be of multiple-choice, objective type. The marks in prelims will not be counted for final ranking, but just for qualification for the main exam.
A candidate’s rank in the UPSC Civil Service Exam depends only on the mark scored in Main and Interview.

1. Take up a graduation course that involves history and polity. These subjects are of immense importance to the UPSC syllabus.
2. During your graduation, study these subjects really well keeping in mind the UPSC syllabus.
3. If you would acquire a level of mastery in these subjects, you can also opt for one of them as your optional subject.
4. Also, start reading public administration, economics, etc. You can even study these subjects as your main subject, all depending on your interests and aptitude.
The civil Service Exam is a very popular competitive exam in India. IAS and IPS are the two most popular choices among Civil Service aspirants.
Is it Possible to become an Indian Administrative Service Officer After the 12th
It is not possible to become an IAS Officer right after completing the 12th standard! In order to become an IAS Officer, you must apply for the CSE exam conducted by the UPSC.
You must also crack the exam (preliminary, mains, and interview) in order to get selected for the training.
The basic eligibility criteria required to appear for this exam is – candidates must possess Graduate Degree from a recognized University/Institute!
So technically, 12th passed students can’t appear for this exam right after 12th. After completing the 12th, they must complete Graduation first.
After completing the Graduation program successfully, they may take a shot and CSE and become an IAS Officer subsequently!
Educational Qualifications Required
All candidates must have as a minimum one of the following educational qualifications:
1. Degree from a Central State, or a Deemed university.
2. A degree received through correspondence or distance education.
3. Degree from an open university.
4. A qualification recognized by the Government of India as being equivalent to one of the above.
The following candidates are also eligible, but must submit proof of their eligibility from a competent authority at their institute/university at the time of the main examination, failing which they will not be allowed to attend the exam:
1. Candidates who have appeared in an examination, the passing of which would render them educationally qualified enough to satisfy one of the above points.
2. Candidates who have passed the final exam of the MBBS degree but have not yet completed an internship.
3. Candidates who have passed the final exam of ICAI, ICSI, and ICWAI.
4. A degree from a private university.
5. A degree from any foreign university recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.
Age Limit
The candidate must be between the age of 21-32 years (for the General category candidate) on August 1 of the year of examination. However, age relaxations die to exist for SC, ST, OBC and Physically Handicapped candidates.
For Other Backward Castes (OBC) the upper age limit is 35.
For Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), the limit is 37 years.
The upper age limit is relaxed for certain candidates who are backward regarding other factors and physically handicapped (PH) people.
Steps on How to Become Indian Administrative Service Officer After 12th
1. Obtain a Bachelor Degree
After higher secondary, candidates who wish to become IAS officers are required to obtain graduation in any discipline from a UGC-recognized university.
A Bachelor’s degree is the minimum qualification required to apply for the civil service exam.
There is no minimum percentage required to be eligible for this exam. Final-year candidates are also eligible to apply for this exam.
2. Qualify for the Civil Service Exam
The all-India combined competitive examination for Civil Service comprises of two stages. They are:
Main Examination
However, they usually conduct the preliminary examination on May/ June every year. This exam will be in objective type format. The exam comprises two papers, general studies, and an optional subject.
There will be questions for 150 marks from the general section and 300 marks from optional subjects. Candidates can choose their optional subject from the list given below.

2. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science

8. Geography
9. Geology
10. Indian History
11. Law

The medium of instruction will be in English and in Hindi. Candidates can expect questions in the optional paper from the degree level syllabus.
The time limit of each paper is two hours
. Candidates who have cleared the preliminary examination are eligible for the main exam.
3. Clear the Main Examination
The main examination is of descriptive type. It consists of nine papers. The time duration for each paper is three hours. It comprises the following papers.
1. One Indian Language for 300 marks
2. English for 300 marks
3. General Essay for 300 marks
4. General Studies of 300 marks
5. Any two optional papers for 300 marks each
The final selection for the Indian Administrative Service is carried out based on a personal interview. Usually, the final interview is conducted in the month of April/ May every year.
Candidates can expect questions on matters of general interest. The questions measure the suitability and the mental calibre of the candidates.
Apart from these, candidates will have to go for a medical test as part of the selection procedure. Once selected, they require all candidates to undergo compulsory foundation training.
