ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to investigate the development and utilization of information resources in the state owned university libraries in Northern Nigeria. The study formulated used six research questions and used two hundred and two (220) samples from the population of two hundred and fifty nine.

A survey method was used in undertaking the study, in which answers were sought on the type of information resources acquired by the libraries of the state owned universities in Northern Nigeria.

Their methods of acquisition of the information resources and the stakeholders responsible for the development of the information resources in these libraries.

The data collected from the study were analyzed using frequency tables and percentage.

The study discovered that there are different types of information resources in the state owned university libraries in Northern Nigeria; and the libraries have various means of acquiring these resources. These include purchase, gift and exchange programmes, and donation a bequeath.

In conclusion the study made some recommendations which include that: the management of state owned university libraries should give autonomy to their libraries when it comes to budget so that they could be  fast in facilitating their cardinal activities.

INTRODUCTION

The role of education as an instrument for promoting the socio- economic, political and cultural development of any nation can never be over-emphasized. According to Abdulkareem (2001:222), a nation’s growth and development is determined by its human resources.

The provision of the much-needed manpower to accelerate the growth and development of the economy has been said to be the main relevance of University education in Nigeria Ibukun (1997:210).

Precisely, the National Policy on Education (2004:36) highlighted the aims of University education thus: To contribute to national development through high-level relevant manpower training.

To develop and inculcate proper values for the survival of the individuals and the society; To develop the intellectual capability of individuals to understand and appreciate their local and external environments.
