1. Job Title: Translator

Location: Abuja
Duration: 30 working days

Job Description

  • Farm Innovation Nigeria Limited seeks application from suitable qualified individuals for the position of a Translator who will be responsible for translation of agricultural contents that will be pushed to farmers via SMS
  • This is a short term role that will last for a maximum duration of 30 working days.

Key Responsibilities

  • The major responsibility for this role is the translation of developed agricultural contents that cuts across Good Agronomic Practices (GAP), Business Advisory and Agribusiness to Hausa language.
  • The target audience for the translated documents are small holder farmers based in remote and at-risk locations in the Northern part of Nigeria.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A good understanding of agricultural practices in Nigeria
  • At least 2 years relevant experience in translating contents from English to Hausa
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication,
  • Must be able to provide accurate documentation of his/her work
  • Ability to use Microsoft word.

2. Job Title: Junior Agronomist

Job Description

  • We are looking for Junior Agronomists to join our project team in the implementation of an agricultural extension project in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.
  • As an organization, our mission is to change the African agricultural narrative by building successful Agri-preneurs through increased access to information, markets, resources and affordable Agtech products. Our vision is to be Africa’s foremost hub and catalyst for Agricultural technology innovations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support in disseminating crop management practices at the project location to serve as a basis for the identification of improved and appropriate crop production, Good Agronomic Practices (GAP) and post-production technologies.
  • Provide support and participate in on-field tests and demonstrations of the identified technologies and transfer them to farmers.
  • Provide support for the development of value chain content for GAP and Farmer Service center for selected value chain.
  • Provide support for training and technical backstopping for Small Holder Farmers on improved and appropriate crop production and post-production technologies.
  • Actively foster the active participation of women in the project activities;
  • Promote proper adoption of GAP, advanced agro-techniques identified by the project as well as Farmers Service Centre of the Project;
  • Conduct support visits to the project areas to ensure maximum impact of the project
  • Participate in the establishment of mechanisms to collect appropriate information of the monitoring and evaluation system of activities under outcome so the project;
  • Contribute to periodic project progress reports
  • Undertake any other related duties arising within the context of the project

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Agriculture (preferably with specialization in Agronomy) Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Food Science, and Food Security or related discipline
  • At least 3 years’ experience in agriculture, with specialization in Agronomy, crop science, extension services, soil science, animal science, or Agric value chain development.

Competencies:

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and reporting skills
  • Knowledge about climate change adaptation, climate-smart agriculture techniques, etc.
  • Knowledge in computer (MS word, excel and powerpoint)

  • Coordinate with partner agriculture research institutions to develop, improve or recommend information on varieties of selected field crops with respect to characteristics including efficient production, higher yield, improved quality, adaptation to specific soils or climates, and resistance to diseases and pests.
  • Provide best practices pertaining to crop production for planting, cultivation, and harvesting, and make appropriate recommendations to Small Holder Farmers.
  • Stay informed about the effects of various climatic conditions on crops including best practices for control of weeds, crop diseases, and insect pests, and make recommendations as appropriate to the project team.
  • Support in the development of value chain content for GAP and Farmer Service center for selected value chains.
  • Provide virtual support to farmers in remote areas through a designated virtual platform.
  • Actively foster the active participation of women in the project activities;
  • Promote proper adoption of GAP, advanced agro-techniques identified by the project as well as Farmers Service Centre of the Project;
  • Provide support for training and technical backstopping for small holder farmers on improved and appropriate crop production and post-production technologies.
  • Conduct support visits to the project areas to ensure maximum impact of the project
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining an information database for Farmers Service Centre, GAP training and Business advisory services and other relevant service to aid project delivery
  • Provide technical assistance for both short-term assignments in an advisory capacity, monitoring progress against contract deliverables and providing guidance to project field staff
  • Prepare reports and other documents as required such as Lessons Learned and Innovations in interaction with Farmers on the field etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree (Masters preferred) in Agriculture (preferably with specialization in Agronomy) Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Food Science, and Food Security or related discipline
  • At least 5 years’ experience in agriculture, with specialization in Agronomy, crop science, soil science, animal science, extension services or Agric value chain development.

Competencies:

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and reporting skills
  • Knowledge about climate change adaptation, climate-smart agriculture techniques, etc.

4. Job Title: M&E Officer

Location: Abuja

Job Description

  • Farm Innovation Nigeria Limited seeks application from suitable qualified individuals for the position of a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for an agricultural extension project in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.
  • The intervention targets small holder farmers who live on less than $2 a day and do not have access to information that is perceived accessible in this technology age, living in remote villages where internet access and telecommunication network proliferation is still low.
  • The project will partner relevant actors in the agriculture value chain to ensure successful introduction and adoption of agricultural extension services in the hard-to-reach areas of North-Eastern Nigeria leveraging technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the implementation of monitoring and evaluation activities are in line with the project’s implementation plan and meets the donor and project’s M&E needs.
  • Provide technical support to state onboarding officers in ensuring that data/indicators related to the project are accurately captured, and reported according to set guidelines.
  • Represent and make appropriate presentations to stakeholders at various forum on program achievements and deliverables and other M&E activities
  • Support the development and design of the M&E framework, tools and project M&E plans, guidelines and ensure efficient data management processes
  • Provide continuous technical lead to project team on data management and regularly analyze state data, highlight important programmatic gaps and coordinate with the chief technical officer, team lead and others in addressing these gaps.
  • Conduct routine monitoring and supportive supervisory visits to project sites, including the conduct of data verification and validation and data quality assessments (DQAs) using standard checklists
  • Ensure regular maintenance of database/information system, project’s training database and project progress updates that documents achievements on a regular basis.
  • Support monitoring activities to project sites, collation/analysis of monitoring reports for program feedback and decision making
  • Conduct operational research activities and participate in project assessments, evaluations and design teams as applicable.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Agric. Economics, Extension, Statistics or related fields (master’s degree an added advantage)
  • At least 3 years of direct involvement in providing monitoring and evaluation support for related programs
  • Experience with participatory and community-based M&E systems
  • Previous experience with development of e-platforms for data capturing and reporting
  • Proficiency in database development/management, and skills in analyzing, interpreting and communicating data and information to various stakeholders
  • Experience using mobile data collection tool is preferred
  • Experience writing SQL queries is desired
  • Significant experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative assessments and surveys
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to speak Hausa or Kanuri will be an added advantage.
  • Note: This position requires frequent travels. Selected candidate must be willing to travel to the communities and villages in the implementing states.

5. Job Title: Agric Value Chain Consultant

Location: Abuja

Background and Context
Farm Innovation recognizes that there is need for smallholder farmers to access information on locally-adapted best management approaches, as well as the need to promote an appropriate enabling environment (e.g. policies/incentives, financial services, human/social capital). Through its approach to agricultural innovation – research and technology, Farm Innovation is already making significant contributions towards making its vision a reality.
A major concern for stakeholders within the agricultural social structure over the years have been to reduce to the barest minimum the problems associated with agricultural loss, wastages and output under utilization by ensuring an efficient optimization of all the linkages between the producer and final consumer through the value chain concept.
The goal of value chain and market development is to “make markets work for the poor”. Thus we leverage market systems development to offer pro poor opportunities for growth by promoting the flow of knowledge and resources along value chains to small enterprises and poor producers and farmers.
Job Description

  • We are in need of an Agric Value Chain Consultant that will support our ongoing project that is leveraging technology to provide extension services for farmers in Adamawa and Gombe states in Nigeria
  • The value chain consultant should have specialization in at least one of the target value chains for this project – groundnut, sorghum, rice, tomatoes and livestock.

Objectives of the Assignment
The main objective of this assignment is to provide sufficient understanding on the current status and future potential of different agricultural commodities in the project area; identifying specific bottlenecks and opportunities in their respective value chains that can be addressed and leveraged through the project intervention thereby increasing production, income and employment for the rural poor.
Scope of Work
The consultant is expected to undertake the following:

  • Within the project area, identify growth potential, market trends and competitiveness of selected value chains
  • Value chain mapping that depicts the chain actors and their functions and inter-relationships
  • Identify and examine constraints and opportunities within the selected value chains
  • Identify the underlying policy, institutional, and infrastructural issues that affect the competitiveness and exclusion of the selected value chains
  • Identify institutions and organizations working for selected value chains from national to local levels that can contribute to pro poor value chain development.
  • Support with GAP curriculum and radio program design.
  • Provide support in training of our field agronomists.

Deliverables
The following are the expected outputs from the consultant:

  • Detailed analysis of selected value chains with quantitative and qualitative description of needs
  • Value chain mapping of actors
  • Economic analysis, production and market costs and revenues, value additions and profit margin along the chain including income and employment
  • List of potential agribusiness interested to collaborate with the project through contractual arrangements
  • List of stakeholders consulted.

Required Profile

  • An Advanced University Degree in Agricultural Development, Agricultural Economics or other related subject areas
  • Good understanding of agricultural and rural development from both a development cooperation and private sector perspective
  • Excellent understanding of the international development and its implementation and funding mechanisms (public and private)
  • Good understanding of agribusinesses and agricultural value chain trends and direction, including major areas of interest and intervention, as well as interactions with the private sector
  • At least 5 years relevant experience working in the area of agribusiness and agricultural value chain development
  • Fluency in English, with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Fluency in Hausa or Kanuri is highly required.
