Roger Riordan is now accepting applications from suitably qualified students into Koiki Eddie Mabo Scholarship for students. It is a fully-funded scholarship for all students.

About Koiki Eddie Mabo Scholarship

Dr Roger Riordan AM generously established this scholarship fund in memory of Koiki Eddie Mabo in 2001. The goal is to establish a scholarship fund that can help an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student enrolled in the College of Health and Medicine and Wellbeing.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. You must be enrolled in one of the College of Health and Medicine and Wellbeing’s undergraduate programs in any year.
  2. Be a full-time student.

  3. Demonstrate academic progress by obtaining the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent for new students, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 for returning students.

  4. As stated above, establish your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity and background with the university.

  5. You must not be the recipient of the another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship.

Required Documentation

  1. Your application will not be processed unless you provide documentation. Prior to completing the online application procedure, please have all required documents ready to upload as PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, or JPG files.
  2. A personal essay (about one A4 page) explaining your academic achievements, professional goals in the relevant field of study, and how this scholarship might help you.

  3. As a qualified practitioner, you will be asked to quickly detail (1-2 paragraphs) how you will contribute to improving Aboriginal health as part of your application.

Benefit

The scholarship will provide a $5,000 annual benefit, payable in $2,500 following each semester’s census date, assuming that all eligibility criteria are completed.

The scholarship is ongoing for the standard duration of the program for which it is awarded (3 – 5 years of study).

Selection

They will assess the scholarship application, and any required supporting documents as part of the selection process. The Selection Committee will consider a prior academic accomplishment, professional interests, community , and involvement in extracurricular activities.
