L.S.H.S.C.E: WAEC Liberia – LIBERIA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION

BACKGROUND

The May Liberia Senior High School Certificate Examination (LSHSCE) is administered to school candidates in the 12th grade in the Republic of Liberia . The actual date for the examination is communicated to the schools through the Ministry of Education before the commencement of the school year. Subjects offered for this examination are grouped into three categories: Core, General and Science Subjects.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

The May Liberia Senior High School Certificate Examination (LSHSCE) is opened and administered to all school candidates in the 12 th grade in the Republic of Liberia after due registration with the West African Examinations Council. The entry period runs from September to November.

All candidates for the examination are to enter for a minimum of eight subjects and a maximum of nine subjects from the three subject groups as listed in the background above. Additional subjects such as vocational and technical subjects will be added in the future if the Ministry of Education deems it necessary.

CANDIDATURE

The candidature for the May LSHSCE is growing dramatically. The entry for the 2005 examination was 13, 375 while that of 2006 was 15,546. The entry for the 2007 examination was 18,431 candidates while that of 2008 was 19,406 thus showing an increase of about 5.29% over the previous year.

GRADING

The grading system used at the LSHSCE is the stanine with 1 representing Excellent, 2 – Very Good , 3 – Good, 4 – 6 representing Credit, 7 – 8 representing Pass and 9 representing Fail . The grades boundary per subject for each of the grades is determined at the Subject Awards Meeting held by TDD after which the grade/calculation sheets are submitted to CSD for processing.

The final grade of a candidate has two components: Continuous Assessment Score ( CASS ) or School’s Grade and Terminal Assessment Score (TASS) or WAEC’s Grade with the Cass contributing 30% while the TASS contributes the balance 70% of the candidate’s final grade. The CASS are submitted to TAD by the various schools a week after the administration of the entire examination on a spread sheet provided by WAEC. There are plans to have the CASS submitted electronically in the future.

RESULT/ CERTIFICATE

Results for individual schools are sent immediately to the principal of each school that presented candidates for the examination when the results are officially released.

Certificates are awarded to only successful candidates on the examination.

To qualify for a Liberia Senior High School Certificate, a candidate must pass in at least six subjects including the Core (Compulsory) Subjects and at least a subject each from the other two groups.

Successful candidates are usually placed in either one of the three Divisions listed below:

Division I

  1. Pass at least six subjects from the three subject groups;
  2. Obtain an aggregate of at most 24 in the best six subjects; and
  3. Pass Mathematics and English Language with credit.

Division II

  1. Pass at least six subjects from the three subject groups;
  2. Obtain an aggregate between 25 and 36 inclusively in the best six subjects; and
  3. Pass Mathematics and English Language with credit.

Division III

  1. Pass at least six subjects from the three subject groups;
  2. Obtain an aggregate between 37 and 48 in the best six subjects; and
  3. Pass Mathematics and English Language with a grade of 7/ 8.
