What You Should Know about Lakeside School
Lakeside School was developed in 1919 by Frank G. Moran as Moran-Lakeside School on the shores of Lake Washington in the Denny-Blaine neighborhood of Seattle.
Originally, the school was intended to feed students to Moran’s other school, the Moran School on nearby Bainbridge Island. Around 1923 the school was incorporated and renamed Lakeside Day School. In 1923, it moved to the present site of The Bush School in Washington Park.
In 1930, Lakeside moved to its newly constructed campus at its current location. It became coeducational upon merger with St. Nicholas School, a Capitol Hill private girls’ school, in 1971.
All courses at Lakeside are college preparatory, and although AP courses are not offered, the majority meet or exceed the rigor and depth of the AP curriculum.
Honors courses are only available in science and math. Graduation requirements include 2 years of Arts, 4 years of English, 3 years of History, 3 years in either a foreign language offered (Chinese/French/Spanish/Latin) or 2 years in two foreign languages, 3 years of Math, 2 years of Physical Education, and 2 years of Science.
Additionally, students are required to participate in one week of Outdoor Education before graduation and perform 80 service hours (on average 146 hours reported per student), at least 60 of which must be off-campus.

Lakeside Tuition and Financial Aid
The Lakeside school tuition for the 2021-2022 school year is $38,160. If the full tuition is a stretch for your family’s income and resources, Lakeside has an extensive need-based financial-aid program that supports qualifying families with incomes from $10,000 to over $250,000.
(Families with incomes over $250,000 may qualify for assistance if there are either extenuating circumstances or if there are multiple independent school or college tuitions within the family).
Financial assistance for recipients extends beyond tuition and covers additional school-related costs including, but not limited to, food, books, bus, laptop, and field trips.
For the 2020-21 school year, Lakeside awarded $8.3 million in need-based tuition aid and will award $600,000+ for non-tuition costs to 33 percent of the student population.
The average tuition for a financial-aid recipient is $8,650. While financial aid and scholarships do not need to be repaid, it is required that recipients reapply for financial aid annually.
In most cases, a student’s tuition payment will remain at the same level, adjusting for tuition increases. Only in a few cases do aid amounts change significantly year-to-year, and this would reflect a dramatic change in financial circumstance.

Application for Lakeside Financial Aid
Lakeside uses the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) financial aid application through School & Student Services (SSS). The following steps outline the application process, required documents, and timeline.
Starting early October 2020, go to . Follow the “Complete your Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS)” link and begin your application.
Submit and pay for the PFS. Fee waivers are automatically granted to families who qualify based on SSS guidelines.
Upload copies of the required documents (listed below) to your SSS account OR email, mail, or hand-deliver it to Lakeside’s office of admissions and financial aid.
Additional required documents:
- 2020 income statements. This includes W2s, unemployment statements, and Social Security income statements.
- 2020 IRS Form 1040 and relevant schedules. We also ask that business owners and those in partnerships include a Schedule C, Schedule E, Form 1120, and or K-1.
- Additional documents may be requested.
- Timeline: The PFS and all additional required documents are due February 4, 2021.

The Lakeside School Scholarships Application
Fortunately, Lakeside School has generously endowed scholarships created by supportive donors. These need-based scholarships are awarded to deserving applicants who apply and qualify for financial aid.
It is important to note that financial aid applicants are not required to apply for a scholarship. However, it is considered a significant honor to be associated with one of these special funds.
If a student applies and is chosen as a scholarship recipient, his or her financial aid will be funded from a specific scholarship endowment.
Scholarships are not awarded in addition to financial aid; these specific endowments are the source of the financial aid for approximately 20 percent of the students enrolled at Lakeside.

Read the descriptions in the links above and decide which scholarship(s) match your personal characteristics. A student may apply for up to two scholarships, writing separate essays for each.
The deadline to apply for endowed scholarships is February 4, 2021.
Using Microsoft Word, write an essay describing why you, the student, would be an ideal candidate for the scholarship. (Applying for two scholarships requires a different essay for each application; submit essays separately).

Lakeside School Admissions
