– LGBTQIA+ Shaping Futures Scholarship –
The Shaping Futures Scholarship Fund is now accepting applications from suitably qualified students into LGBTQIA+ Shaping Futures Scholarship for students. It is a fully-funded scholarship for all students.
About LGBTQIA+ Shaping Futures Scholarship
The Shaping Futures Scholarship Fund was created in 2011 with the goal of assisting low-income students. The LGBTQIA+ Shaping Futures Scholarship aims to help a student who identifies as LGBTQIA+ and is school and personal obligations such as:
1. Responsibilities of caregiver
2. English is a challenging language.
3. Having financial difficulties
4. Long-term medical conditions/disabilities, or the of abuse that are still present
5. Disadvantages due to location or distance
6. Responsibilities of the sole parent
7. Additional attributes such as Indigenous Australians or having Refugee status.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Be enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree program at the University of Newcastle.
2. Be enrolled full time.
3. Show academic progress either by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent required for entry for commencing students, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 for continuing students.
4. Show the impact of personal circumstances such as caregiver, lone parent, financial difficulties, English language problem, Indigenous Australians, long-term medical condition or abuse consequences, handicap, refugee status, regional/remote disadvantage, etc.
5. Identify as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
6. Be an Australian citizen or a Permanent Resident of Australia (includes New Zealand Permanent Residents).
7. You may not receive another UON Donor funded or sponsored scholarship at the same time.

Required Documentation
1. Your application will not be processed unless you provide documentation. Prior to completing the online application procedure, please have all required documents ready to upload as PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, or JPG files.
2. A personal essay (about one A4 page) explaining your academic achievements, professional goals in the relevant field of study, and how this scholarship might help you.
3. You may be asked to present documentation to back up your claims of educational disadvantage. These will be identified based on your specific application responses when you apply.
4. The question “Do you identify as LGBTQIA+?” will be answered with a Y/N response on the application.
Benefit
Following selection and after the census date for 1, the scholarship gives a reward of $4000 to be paid as a lump amount (during April).
Selection
The scholarship application and any required supporting documentation will be evaluated before a decision is made. Applications will be ranked according to the criteria, and offers will be offered to those who best fit the requirements.
