MAKA Scholarships

Minnesota Association for Korean Americans (MAKA)

A small number of scholarships are being offered by the Minnesota Association for Korean Americans (MAKA) to Minnesota high school seniors of Korean descent who intend to attend college.

These awards are meant to encourage students of Korean descent to pursue further education while also boosting their sense of self-worth. All those who are interested are urged to apply.

Following an assessment of each student’s application materials by the committee, a non-renewable $1500 Scholarship (plus an additional $500 for the best essay) will be given.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR 2023/2024 MAKA Scholarships

  • Minnesota High School Senior in school year 2022-2022
  • Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States
  • Korean heritage (minimum 25% biologically Korean)
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0

HOW TO APPLY For The MAKA Scholarships

Applications must include:

  1. Application form & photograph of the applicant. (Jpeg file preferred.)
  2. Official high school transcript of last two school years. (A scan or photo is acceptable; do not have to be a sealed copy from a third party.)
  3. (Optional) PSAT/SAT or ACT scores (PDF file)
  4. Scholarship essay. Two to three pages on the following topic:
  5. “What does it mean to you to be a Korean American in MN?”

*Application-related materials will not be returned.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • The 2023/2024 application opens on August 1, 2022. Applicants may apply via one of the following options:

    • Mail: MAKA, P.O. Box 390553, Edina, MN 55439
  • All materials must be received by 11:59 pm CDT on September 30, 2022. After the application deadline, changes to applications will no longer be accepted.
  • Awardees are notified at the end of October 2022. MAKA intends to award 10-15 scholarships this year. Selection will be based on academic achievements, honors, extracurricular activities, and the essay. All applications are reviewed and discussed by the MAKA Scholarship Committee. Decisions of the Committee are final.
