About NABTEB

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board was founded in 1992 to domesticate craft level examinations previously conducted by City & Guilds, Pittman’s, and the  throughout the United Kingdom in conformity with the principles of the National Policy on Education.

Its formation was the culmination of a 15-year evolutionary process in which FOUR Government Panels were established at various periods to assess the place and structure of public examinations in our educational system.

The management of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) is yet to release the 2022 November/December NBC/NTC and ANBC/ANTC examinations results.

Candidates who intend to take part in the 2022 NABTEB GCE can learn how to check their results online.

NABTEB is one of the examination bodies set up by the Federal Government in 1992 to reduce the burden of conducting examinations, which involves a lot of technical and trade-related practicals.

The board conducts the (NTC), National Business (NBC) and their respective advance level examinations (ANBC and ANTC).

NABTEB Graphic Arts Practical Questions and Answers

Question 1

i. List any three properties of clay.

ii. State any six stages of the dry method of preparing clay.

Answers

A large number of candidates attempted this question and performed fairly. Though, few of the candidates misinterpreted properties for the function of clay. They were expected to respond to the question thus:

(a)

– It is malleable/workable when wet;

– plastic in nature when wet;

– less porous;

– contains impurities (foreign particles);

– it has colour;

– it has mineral constituents;

– becomes hard when fired;

– can dissolve in water

– contains fine particles.

(b) Dry method

– Collect dry clay;

– break the large lumps of clay into small pieces;

– remove unwanted materials;

– pound into powder;

– sieve to remove the remaining impurities;

– mix with enough water to make it plastic;

– knead on a surface to remove air bubbles to obtain the right consistency;

– clay is ready for use or storage.

Question 2

i. List any three West African communities that are famous in the art of bronze casting.

ii. Explain the process of cire perdue technique.

Answers

The question was answered by few candidates whom did fairly. The performance of the candidates was fair. They were expected to respond to the question thus:

(a)
– For people of Benin Republic;

– The Ashantis of Ghana;

– Ife people of Nigeria;

– Benin people of Nigeria;

– The Nupes of Nigeria.

Any 3 points at 1 mark each = 3 x 1 mark = 3marks

(b)

– Make a model of the object to be cast;

– cover the model with beeswax

– make details on the wax;

– cover the layer of beeswax with clay/mould;

– tie both inner and outer moulds together tightly;

– allow the mould to dry;

– heat the mould to remove the wax;

– pour the liquid metal into the vacuum created

– allow it to cool/set;

– remove the outer layer of mould to expose the image;

– remove the inner clay model;

– apply finishing.

Question 3

a. List any five traditional crafts of West Africa.

b. State any five factors limiting the growth of traditional craft practice in West Africa.

Answers

Most of the candidates attempted this question, though their performance was not satisfactory. The candidates were expected to answer in the following way:

(a)

– Basketry;

– Leather work;

– Blacksmithing;

– Goldsmithing;

– Carving;

– Cloth weaving;

– Mat weaving;

– Cane craft;

– Pottery;

– Dyeing;

– Bronze/brass casting;

– Calabash decoration;

– Beadwork;

– Boat/canoe making;

– Embroidery.

(b)

– Religious belief;

– Climate condition;

– Infiltration of a foreign culture;

– Illegal exportation of artwork;

– Lack of appropriate tools

– Lack of funds;

– Lack of proper documentation

– Inadequate needed materials;

– Lack of communication

– Government negative attitude towards craft

– Notion that craft is meant for fewer intellects/mediocre;

– Scarcity of textbooks on craft;

– Poor marketing of craft products.

Question 4

Write notes on Udo Emma with particular reference to:

i. His nationality;

ii. His training as an artist;

iii. Also, his training of specialization;

iv. Four of his achievements in art;

v. Two of his published books.

Answers

A large number of candidates avoided this question and performed poorly. The candidates were expected to answer in the following way:

(a) He is a Nigerian.

(b) He studied art at Methodist Teacher Training College, Uzoakoli in Imo ate.
He was trained at Central School of Art, London

(c) He specialized on education and painting.

(d)
(i) He fought for the inclusion of art in the school curriculum in 1936.

(ii) He was a motivator to the younger artists.

(iii) He taught art in various schools in former Eastern Nigeria.

(iv) He wrote art textbooks.

(v) He established two rural pottery centres in Akwa Ibom State.

(vi) Received award to study art.

(e) (i) An African Art Teaching Handbook.

(ii) The Teaching of Clay work in schools.

(iii) The Art and Craft Teacher.
