WHAT IS NEWS?
News is a form communication of chosen information on the present events which is obtainable by print, broadcast, Internet, or word of mouth to a third-party or mass viewers/readers/listeners.
Nearly everyone in large cities in the Nigeria and Abroad historically had morning and afternoon newspapers. While the media evolved and news outlets enlarged to the point of near over-diffusion, most mid-day newspapers were closed. Even the daybreak newspapers have been slowly losing distribution, according to reports advanced by the papers themselves.
Normally, news content is expected to contain the “Five (5) Ws” (what, why, who, when, where, and also how) of an occurrence. With this, there should be no questions left behind. Some Newspapers usually place rigid news stories on the front pages, so the most important information is at the start. Very busy readers can read as little or as much as they wish. Local stations in Nigeria and networks with a set format must take news stories and simplify them down into the most important aspects due to time limitations. Local cable news channels like NTA, Channels TV etc and International dish TV like CNN, BBC, Aljazeera, Press TV, France 24 among others are able to take full advantage of a story, less important stories, and giving as much detail about breaking news for example; when a dog bites a man that is not news, but when a man bites a dog that becomes a news.
Online journalism is news that is reported on the Internet. News can be delivered more quickly through this method of news but most times if a reader is not careful enough to read from websites that carries accurate information, they might end up getting wrong information. Every reader has the right to correct information called Newsworthiness.
Newsworthiness is defined as a subject having satisfactory significance to the general public or a special audience to warrant press/media attention or coverage and reporting.
There is a tremendous shortcoming in not having the harsh quality of the press applied to you daily. Even though we never like it and even though we wish they didn’t write it, and even though we condemn it, there isn’t any doubt that we could not do the job at all in a free society without a very active press. But also bear in mind that News reports don’t change the world, only facts change it, and those have already happened when we get the news.
