The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is a government agency that has been charged with the responsibility of migration management in Nigeria. Over the years, the NIS has witnessed a series of changes since it was extracted from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in 1958.

1. Nigeria Immigration Service Promotes 3,548 Junior Staff
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it has promoted 3,548 junior staff and converted 118 personnel to enhance efficiency in the service. The service’s spokesman, Sunday James, said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.
Mr. James explained that 3,548 staff were promoted from the rank of Immigration Assistants to Inspectors of Immigration. He said that 118 staff were also converted from Chief Immigration Assistants to Inspectors of Immigration.
2. Nigerian Immigration to Canada is Booming
Nigerian immigration to Canada has tripled in recent years and is poised for further increases post coronavirus. A total of 12,600 Nigerians gained permanent residence last year, which represents a tripling of Nigerian immigration to Canada since 2015.
The vast majority of Nigerians came to as economic class immigrants. The main way that Canada manages economic class immigration applications is through Express Entry, and 65 percent of Nigerian immigrants gained Canadian permanent resident status through Express Entry in 2019.
3. Post-Coronavirus: Canada set to Welcome More Nigerian Immigrants
Once the coronavirus has been contained and we return to a sense of normalcy, we should continue to expect higher levels of Nigerian immigration to Canada.
Global oil prices have plummeted once again, which will create economic challenges for oil-rich countries around the world. Canada’s rising immigration levels over the coming years will open up more economic class immigration spots, including through Express Entry.
The Nigeria Immigration Service has launched the Nigeria Visa Policy 2020 (NVP 2020). The new policy is designed to facilitate economic activities and in turn economic development and national security.
The NVP 2020 expands the classes of visas from the current six to 79 classes. The new classes are categorized into three:
- Short Visit Visas (28 classes): These allow foreigners to visit Nigeria for a period of up to 3 months, for the purpose of tourism and short business meetings, amongst others.
- Temporary Residence Visas (36 classes): These allow individuals to reside in Nigeria for the purposes of employment, accompanying employed migrants, and schooling, amongst others.
- Permanent residence Visas (15 classes): these confer permanent residence status on spouses of Nigerian citizens, Nigerians by birth who have renounced their Nigerian citizenship, and their spouses, investors who import an annual minimum threshold of capital, highly skilled individuals and some classes of retirees.
5. Nigeria Immigration Changes Recruitment Website
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it has changed its recruitment portal to www.immigrationrecruitment.org.ng. The Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO) Mr. Sunday James disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
The Service hereby informs the general public that the recruitment portal has been changed to www.immigrationrecruitment.org.ng which is currently inactive to make it more accessible to applicants.
6. No Fee is Charged for NIS Recruitment
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has warned applicants against patronizing fake recruitment sites as no fee was charged for NIS recruitment.
The Comptroller General, NIS, Mr. Muhammad Babandede, gave the warning in a statement by the Service Public Relations Officer (SPEO), Mr. Sunday James, on Tuesday in Abuja.
Babandede issued the warning while reacting to the reported existence of fake NIS websites on social media.
7. Immigration Boss Warns Against Extra Charges on Passports
Mr. Muhammad Babandede, the Comptroller-General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has warned personnel of the service against extra charges on passport issuance.
Babandede gave the warning during a virtual meeting with passport officers nationwide on Monday in Abuja. The program was anchored from the NIS Headquarters Abuja. Babandede, in a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer (SPEO), Mr. Sunday James, said that Nigerians were not to be surcharged.
