Scholarships for the Legally Blind

According to the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), by definition a “legally blind” individual is one whose vision in both eyes is 20/200 or less when wearing eyeglasses or whose field of vision for both eyes together is 20 degrees or less.

Only 20 percent of legally blind people are totally blind, while the rest have about 10 percent or less of normal vision.

As an example, blind individuals with only central vision can still read ordinary print books. The NFB offers a 30-scholarship program for individuals who are legally blind.

They also give scholarships for sports, or even a scholarship for those with brown hair.

To be qualified for this scholarship, you must be a Current USABA member and must have been an active participant in a USABA event.

3. The Carl Graduate Scholarship Program

The requirements are a bit different with this scholarship award, but still require problems with vision. It is considered one of the premiere and best scholarship programs available.

This program is being re-written as of right now so your best bet is to have your college or universities contact the CCLVI (Council of Citizens with Low Vision, International).

4. The Christian Record Service Scholarship

Partial scholarships are offered to legally blind young people striving to obtain a college education. The award amount Christian Record Services for the Blind gives for scholarships varies from year to year.

An applicant must meet two requirements before the application will be considered. To qualify, you must be legally blind (20/200) with correction) and must be planning to attend college as a full-time student on the undergraduate level to secure training that will enable independence and self-support.

5. Sam Genensky Video Magnifier Award

There are four scholarships available for students who wear glasses. This award is a bit harder to get, but worth it. With so few scholarships available, there are stricter requirements. Try your chance for their $10,000 scholarship.

6. Kenneth Jemigan Scholarship

The American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults annually sponsors the largest scholarship granted in the United States to a legally blind person.

Applications for this scholarship are available for five months. One lucky student receives a $12,000 scholarship to attend college.

7. Delta Gamma Foundation Florence Margaret Harvey Memorial

The scholarship is worth $1,000.00 to an undergraduate or graduate student in the field of rehabilitation or education of people who are blind or visually impaired. 

To be eligible, you will have to complete an easy essay and offer proof of legal blindness from your doctor. You must have a visual field of less than 20/200 in the better eye.

8. Rudolph Dillman Memorial Scholarship

This nice little award is set at $2,500.00 and will be awarded to each undergraduate or graduate who will study in the field of rehabilitation or education of people who are blind.

Students must be a full-time student. There is a small essay involved and a short application process.

9. Guide Scholar Award

This scholarship was created for high school students who are legally blind and are college bound. The applications are accepted from students at the end of their junior year.

The selected students will be awarded the following year with an amazing award of up to $15,000.00. A few requirements are needed such as ACT or SAT scores, colleges you have applied to, any financial circumstances for the award committee to consider, legal proof of blindness, 500 word personal statements and a statement of an influential teacher.
