The Federal Government of Canada is now accepting applications from suitably qualified students for their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. It is a partially funded scholarship for all students.

About Government of Canada

The federal government of Canada is the body responsible for the federal administration of Canada. In Canadian English, the term can mean either the collective set of institutions or specifically the Queen-in-Council.

Aim and Benefits of Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to:

1. Attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally.

2. Develop their leadership potential.

3. Position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow.

Value of the Scholarship

The fellowship is are valued at $70,000 (taxable) per year. There are no additional funds provided for travel/research.

Fellowships are distributed equally among:

1. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

2. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)

3. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

Requirements for Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and foreign citizens are eligible to apply, provided they meet the following conditions:

1. Applicants who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada may only hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at a Canadian institution.

2. Applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and who got their Ph.D., PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree from a foreign university may only hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at a Canadian institution.

3. Applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and who obtained their Ph.D., PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree from a Canadian university may hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at either a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada.

4. Applicants to the 2022-23 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program must fulfill or have fulfilled all degree requirements for a Ph.D., PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree:

‣ Between September 15, 2019, and September 30, 2022 (inclusively), and

‣ Before the start date of their award.

5. Applicants who have not fulfilled all requirements for their degree at the time of application must submit proof no later than October 15, 2022.

6. For applicants who have completed over one Ph.D., PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree, the eligibility window applies to the most recent of these degrees.

Interview Date, Process, and Venue for the Scholarship

1. April to September 2022: Applicants seek endorsement from the host institution to apply, prepare and submit an application (institutions may have internal deadlines).

2. September 21, 2022 (20:00 EDT): Deadline for complete application submission.

3. October to December 2022: Evaluation of applications.

4. Mid-February 2022: Anticipated notification of results. Applicants will be notified by email when the results are available on ResearchNet.
