Newcastle Aboriginal Support Group is now accepting applications from suitably qualified students into their Doherty Ellis Undergraduate Scholarship for students. It is a partially funded scholarship for all students.

About Doherty Ellis Undergraduate Scholarship

This fellowship is named after Jack Doherty, who started the Newcastle Aboriginal Support Group in 1980. Tertiary education, according to Jack, is a crucial component of Aboriginal empowerment. The scholarship encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to complete their studies at Newcastle University.

With money from the defunct Newcastle Aboriginal Support Group, the scholarship was established. Athie and Con Ellis, who immigrated to Australia in the late 1940s, were also remembered with donations.

They appreciated the significance of education and had a unique perspective on the problems experienced by others in the community, as well-educated Greek migrants confronting social and difficulties. They had no children of their own and were committed to assisting young people in their schooling.
