Student Loans Company: The Student Loans Company (SLC) is a non-profit making Government-owned organization set up in 1989 to provide loans and grants to students in universities and colleges in the UK.

The company plays a central role in supporting the Higher Education (HE) and Further Education (FE) sectors by making timely and accurate payments of maintenance grants and loans to learners and ensuring timely and accurate payments of tuition fee loans.

 

The Company does this by working with the Departments for Education (DfE, England), Education and Lifelong Learning (DELL, Scotland), Education and Skills (DfES, Wales) and the Department for the Economy (DfEcon, Northern Ireland).

They also work with the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS), Higher and Further Education providers and other delivery partners.

SLC services around 1.8 million applications per year, responds to 4.5 million phone calls from borrowers and has over 6 million repaying or due to repay customers with loans totaling more than £100 billion.

Mhairi and David Ledgerwood were the first members of staff to relocate from Glasgow to Lingfield Point in Darlington as part of the expansion of the Company which had just moved into the award-winning Memphis building in 2008.

Customer Support Adviser, Darlington

The Customer Support Adviser is Rhonda and is the customer advisor for Student Finance England.

The Customer Support Adviser has worked for the Company for almost 3 and a half years in their ‘state of the art’ Contact Centre at Lingfield Point, Darlington, and has really enjoyed the role of a customer advisor at the company  as it gives a real sense of achievement in helping students get financial support to fund their time at university.

What Does the Company do?

The SLC administers government-funded loans and, in some Administrations, grants to HE and FE learners, on behalf of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, in line with the policy aims of the relevant Administrations.

The primary roles of SLC are to:

1. Deliver appropriate information to all customer groups at the right time and in the right form;
2. Deliver financial support to eligible students and learners pursuing higher and further education in accordance with the student support regulations and relevant public policy objectives. In Scotland, this is done in partnership with the SAAS;
3. Pay to Higher Education Institutions the public contribution towards tuition fees for England, Wales and Northern Ireland; and pay to Further Education Institutions the public contribution for England;
4. Pay bursaries and scholarships on behalf of Higher and Further Education providers;
5. Work in partnership with HMRC to ensure repayments are collected on time from all those due to repay under the Income Contingent Repayment Loan Scheme;
6. Manage the direct collection of voluntary additional repayments, repayments for those living overseas, and recovery of overpaid loans or grants;
7. Provide expert operational advice and high-quality data and information to support Administrations’ policy-making and analysis; and
8. Undertake specific tasks for individual Administrations, such as payment of Education Maintenance Allowances in Wales and Northern Ireland and administer on behalf of the private sector and sold portfolios of Income Contingent Repayment (ICR) and Mortgage Style (MSL) loans.

Aspiring Students Encouraged to Apply Now for Student Finance

Aspiring students in England should apply for their student finance as early as possible, as applications open for the 19/20 academic year.

27 February 2019 This year for the first time students can apply for funding for accelerated degrees, where the courses are available, which allow students to complete their studies in two years rather than three.

Last year SLC received over 1.2million applications from undergraduate students in England with almost 70% of applications in before the deadline.  The deadline for students to get their applications in for the 19/20 academic year is 24 May 2019.

Executive Director of Operations, Derek Ross, said:  “Last year the majority of students applied for their funding early, which was great.

The company hopes to see that trend continuing.   Applying for your student finance before the deadline is the best way to make sure you have your finances sorted before term starts.”
