The Swiss government via its Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), provides various postgraduate fellowships for foreign researchers and scholars.
The research scholarship is offered to postgraduate researchers from any field (who possess a master’s level degree or higher as minimum).
Additionally, applicants are required to plan to travel to Switzerland to conduct research or continue their studies at the doctoral or postdoctoral stage.
Research scholarships are granted for studies or research in every Swiss cantonal universities and universities of applied sciences and two Federal Institutes of Technology.
Only applicants nominated through an academic advisor in one of these higher-education institutions are evaluated.
Art scholarships are available to students of the arts who wish to pursue a master’s level degree within Switzerland.
Art scholarships are given to studies at any Swiss university or conservatory that teaches arts.
Only those who have been granted a spot to study can apply. The scholarship is open to students in a small amount of countries.
The scholarships allow graduates of all fields with the possibility to pursue doctoral or postdoctoral studies in Switzerland in one of the publicly funded universities or other recognized institutions.

Requirements for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships Qualification
The FCS examines scholarship applications in accordance with three criteria:
A) Profile of the candidate
B) Qualitativeness of the project of research or artistic work
C) Synergies and the potential future collaboration in research
Applications are subjected to a preliminary evaluation by the appropriate national authorities or those of the Swiss diplomats.
The applicants who are short-listed are examined in the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) that then makes the final decision.
The FCS is comprised of academics and professors of all Swiss university institutions that are public. Scholarship awards are determined by academic and scientific excellence.
The candidates for the University Scholarships must:
- Have a degree from a university (Bachelors/Masters) at the time of the start of the award.
- Show their academic skills and the goals they hope to accomplish.
- Contact the institution or the professor who supervises their time of study. Universities may require additional information and/or establish additional requirements to determine whether or not you are eligible to be admitted.
- Must be younger than 35 (born on or after January 1, 1978.).
- Have a good understanding of the teaching language (French, German, Italian or English) to benefit fully of their education in Switzerland.
