TEACHING RESOURCES AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ABEOKUTA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OGUN STATE

Abstract

The study examined teaching resources and students performance in secondary schools in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study. The sample sizes of two hundred and seven (207) teachers/students were drawn from the overall population of eight hundred and forty two (842) Social Studies teachers/students in the study area, using sample random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire. The research instrument was validated by three experts. Test-retest procedure was used in

determining the reliability of instrument using Pearson’s Product Moment correlation which yielded a co-efficient of 0.85. Simple percentage was used to analyze the data generated. Based on these, some findings were made as follows; that effective participation of student makes the lesson understandable, inadequate teaching resources make the lesson gloomy, teaching resources help the student to do well in both internal and external examination. In the light of the foregoing study recommend that government and school authorities should co-operate in the provision of teaching resources for social studies teachers, teachers should explain instructional materials very well to students, funds should be made available by the government/school management to social studies teachers to purchase instructional materials.
