Traffic Speed and Delay Studies in Uyo Metropolis.

ABSTRACT

The project studied journey speed and traffic delays along Marian Road, taking some junctions with different traffic control measures as case study. They are IBB junction, Ukana Offot junction and Udo Eduok junction.

Test sections of 200meters each between points were cut along these intersections, with each intersection being a central point.

The method adapted here was the registration number method. The survey was done week days and weekends. Peak and off-peak data were captured, am and pm. Analysis of data yielded the following results.

For IBB, Average Weekly Delay (morning peak) = 55.14seconds, Average Weekly Delay (evening peak)= 74.08seconds,

Total Average Weekly Delay = 63.399seconds average weekly journey speed (morning peak) = 25.16K.P.H, average weekly journey speed (evening peak) = 13.71K.P.H, total average weekly journey speed (morning, evening and off-peak) = 19.42K.P.H.

For Ukana Offot junction, average weekly delay (morning peak) = 46.45seconds, average weekly delay (evening peak) = 58.71seconds, total average weekly delay = 50.51sceonds, average weekly journey speed (morning peak) = 19.53K.P.H, average weekly journey speed (evening peak) = 15.04K.P.H, total average weekly journey speed (morning, evening and off-peak) = 18.62K.P.H.

For Udo Eduok junction, average weekly delay (morning peak) = 61.07seconds, average weekly delay (evening peak) = 73.64seconds, total average weekly delay = 65.33seconds, average weekly journey speed (morning peak) = 14.71K.P.H,· average “weekly journey speed (evening peak) = 13.10K.P.H, total average weekly journey speed (morning evening and off-peak) = 15.15K.P.H.

INTRODUCTION

Road traffic is referred to as all forms of vehicles and transport modes applying on roads. These include cars, buses, bicycles, motorcycles and trucks etc.

Hence traffic delay involves all activities resulting in slowing up, hindrance or lateness in vesicular traffic movement. Hence delays studies of traffic on a given network route so as to determine the level of service of the route involved.

Since mobility is part of our society, each day millions of people travel to and from work, shops, sports. Goods are transported between locations to end – up in stares or end – user. When too many people or goods want to use the same infrastructures all the same time.

A boatel develops After all each infrastructure has a maximum capacity. And in traffic, this bottlenecks results in congestion and hence delay result.

It has been observed that, the numbers of journeys in urban areas grow year on year, traffic in towns and cities get worse.

This problems is increased by the fact that systems do not always work as effectively as they could do, Uyo has not been left out in the increase in vehicular traffic. The ancient city has been recently witnessed a steady increase in the numbers of vehicular traffic playing major routes Abak road inclusive.

With a handful of these vehicles and the attendant insufficiency and poor functionality of control measures, traffic congestion and delay result.

These researches seek to investigate and study the delays in section of Abak road and IBB round – about, hence estimating the level of service in this route.
