Qualifications

You may be eligible for a visa renewal appointment if you meet the following criteria:

1. You wish to renew a U.S. visa of the same class as a U.S. visa that is currently valid or which expired less than 12 months prior to your interview.
For example, you had an H-1 work visa and wish to apply for another H-1 work visa.

2. You are a citizen of Nigeria, and hold a Nigerian passport, and were previously issued a full validity visa.

3. You are a long-term resident of Nigeria with a different nationality who previously received a full-validity U.S. visa.

You are not eligible for a visa renewal appointment if you meet any of the following criteria:

1. You have never had a U.S. visa.

2. You have a U.S. visa that expired over 12 months ago.

3. Your last valid visa was canceled or revoked.

4. You wish to apply for a visa in a different visa class than your previous visa.
For example, you had an F-1 student visa, but now you wish to apply for an H-1 work visa.

5. You are over 18 years old and applying for an H-4 or L-2 for the first time.

6. You are applying for over one visa at the same time.
For example, you are applying for both F and B1/B2 visas.

7. You are applying for a P-3 visa (entertainment/performance visa).

8. You are applying for an H-2B visa (unskilled worker visa).

9. You lost your previous passport that had a valid or expired U.S. visa.

Supporting Documentation

Bring the following documents to the Embassy General on the day of your appointment:

a. A current, valid passport

b. Any passports containing previously issued U.S. visas

c. As applicable, Form I-797 (H and L work visas), Form I-20 (F and M student visas), Form DS-2019 (J exchange visitor visa)

How Long is the Processing Time for US Visa Renewal

The visa processing time depends on the type of visa you are reapplying for. So, do not expect that you will get your visa faster or easier than anyone else. Here are few things to note if you are reapplying for a US Visa;

1. You can’t reapply for a US visa in Nigeria if you don’t have a visa previously to the USA

2. You can’t reapply if your visa has been expired for more than twelve months

3. You can’t renew your visa if the last valid visa was canceled or revoked.

4. You can’t reapply for a visa in a different visa class than your previous visa. For example, you had an F-1 student visa, but now you wish to apply for an H-1 work visa.

5. You can’t reapply for a visa for over one visa at the same time. For example, you cannot apply for both F and B1/B2 visas at the same time.

6. You can’t reapply for a visa if you lost your previous passport that had a valid or expired U.S. visa.

How to Re-apply for US Visa

This renewal service allows you to apply for a visa renewal without having to attend an interview. The service is however only available for BI/B2 Visa holders, F, H, and L visa holders.

1. Visit the nearest GTBank to you and pay the applicable Machine Readable Visa fees for the class of Visa you want to renew.

2. Visit the US embassy website to fill one form you need to renew your visa and the DS 160 Visa application form and then print the application confirmation page.

Ensure that you keep your receipt and confirmation page print-out.

3. Visit the CGI visa appointment website for the US mission to Nigeria and click on the ‘Apply Now’ button on the top right side of the screen.

Answer all the questions and if you qualify, you could print out an application confirmation sheet with details of when to apply to the DHL facilities in Lagos or Abuja.

4. Choose your preferred pick-up location for your passport and get a new visa!
